On Friday, Napheesa Collier and fellow WNBA players debuted in the 3x3 basketball league, Unriavled. However, after her game, the Minnesota Lynx star outlined one potential distraction affecting the successful opening weekend.
Unrivaled had an incredible start to its season on its inaugural day. The fans packed their seats in the arena as they witnessed the Napheesa Collier-led Lunar Owls take on a Breanna Stewart-led Mist Basketball Club. It was a thrilling game packed with 3v3 basketball action, but Collier's team came out on top on its debut.
The Lunar Owls defeated the Mist BC 84–80. After the game, Collier was grateful for the positive response from fans but pointed out one distraction.
"Of course [the fanfare] is a distraction; it's opening weekend," Collier said while talking to ESPN on Friday. "But we've been in that situation where there's lots going on —playing in the finals, playing in college, in championship games. As a professional you're able to block that out."
Initially, Chelsea Gray was the one to point out the fanfare and compliment the crowd's energy in the arena, and Collier followed her lead and made her statement.
Napheesa Collier shares her thoughts on Unrivaled's inaugural day
Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart's 3x3 basketball league Unriavled had an incredible start to the weekend. After securing the win for her team, Collier expressed their thoughts on her league's opening day.
"It was everything we were hoping for," Collier said. "I think this was a great first game just showing what we can do and showing what the experience can be like."
Unrivaled holds its games at the Wayfair Arena in Miami, Florida. The two WNBA stars had the idea for the league two years ago. Now that Unrivaled is here, it has become an alternate option for the WNBA stars to stay close to their home during the offseason.
In previous years, the WNBA stars would travel abroad to play in an overseas league after the WNBA entered the offseason and, although some players like Chennedy Carter and Nika Muhl have traveled overseas, a majority of the W's stars are still in the country.
Angel Reese, Kahleah Cooper and Dearica Hamby are names from the world's biggest women's basketball league who have decided to stay in the States and play in the Unrivaled.
