The Unrivaled league is set to start in just a few months and some of the best players from the WNBA have already committed to playing in it. Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier set the foundation of the league, keeping in mind the financial and family aspects of their fellow players.
Stewart has previously spoken about the seven-month gap between the end of the current season and the start of the next. According to her, the league was created to address the issue of this gap when the players are not engaged and consequently try to make money overseas.
The Phoenix Mercury guard Kahleah Copper stood in full support of the vision behind Unrivaled. In a conversation with Willow Bay at the "espnW Women + Sports Summit," Cooper spoke in detail about what drew her to the Unrivaled league and why it was good for women's basketball.
The Mercury star said that since two of the most successful WNBA players are sitting at the top position, it would be easy to understand what players deserve.
"I mean just Stewie and Phee you know from players directly," Copper said. "So, you understand players' perspective, you understand things that we would like, what we deserve and I think they pushed for nothing but the best, you appreciated that."
Cooper also echoed what Stewart had told Robin Roberts on "Good Morning America" about earning an extra income and not missing family time which resulted from playing overseas.
"And I also think it's important for us to be able to go through our season and be able to have time home. You know so many times we are playing here and ... we want to supplement our income.
"We go overseas, we lose so much of our precious time, you know, with your family, with your friends, just because you are chasing money and also playing game that you love, but how awesome is that you can play in the offseason here and your family can come here."
Moreover, the 2021 WNBA Finals MVP said that playing against top players in the league gives everyone a chance to get better in the offseason.
"It's the top 30 players in the W, so you are still gonna compete at the highest level, you are gonna better in the offseason."
Kahleah Copper is one of the 29 players who have committed to playing in the 3X3 league. Two of the most notable players from WNBA, A'ja Wilson and Caitlin Clark, though have still not committed to playing in Unrivaled.
After Kate Martin, Lexie Hull and Aaliyah Edwards join Unrivaled
Kate Martin was the 27th player from the WNBA to commit to playing in the Unrivaled league. There was buzz among the WNBA fans that with Martin joining the league, it was just a matter of time before Caitlin Clark would join too.
However, the next player to join was the other closest player to Clark, her teammate, and an off-court friend Lexie Hull. The Indiana Fever guard became the 28th player to join Unrivaled.
Shortly after her, Washington Mystics player Aaliyah Edwards became the 29th player to join, leaving just one spot open.
The Unrivaled will start in January and will feature some of the best players in America. The league will have six teams and will play twice a week. The minimum salary paid to each player would be $100,000.
