A'ja Wilson's reigning back-to-back WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces haven't quite looked like themselves in 2024. While Wilson is far from the problem in Las Vegas, currently leading the WNBA Most Valuable Player race, the Aces have struggled at times throughout this season.
After setting the WNBA single-season wins record in 2023, the Aces have posted a 20-12 record through 32 games this season and are currently in possession of the fourth seed.
Las Vegas appears to be smiling through its losses, as veteran guard Sydney Colson cracked a joke about the team dropping to last place at a Wild'N Out event on Monday afternoon.
In a freestyle rap, Colson humorously sang,
"This is my team, we're the Las Vegas Aces, but if we keep losing games, we're going to be in last place."
The joke drew a hilarious reaction from A'ja Wilson, as the MVP favorited looked shocked at her teammate's song.
While they may not be the 34-win Aces of 2023, Las Vegas won't be dropping to last place in the WNBA anytime soon. With a record of 4-4 since returning from the All-Star break, the Aces have already clinched a playoff berth, giving them a shot to defend their crown with one of the most talented rosters in the league.
Aces forward A'ja Wilson the runaway favorite to win WNBA MVP
A'ja Wilson has remained a consistently dominant force in the WNBA this season. The forward is the runaway betting favorite to win the 2024 WNBA MVP and could force the race to a unanimous vote.
Wilson's MVP odds currently sit at (-3500) per FanDuel odds per Sept. 3. Those are markedly better than Napheesa Collier (+3000) and Caitlin Clark (+7500), who are second and third in the MVP race, respectively.
Wilson is on pace to break the WNBA single-season scoring record. She's averaging 27.5 points per game, 2.3 more points per game than Diana Taurasi's record of 25.3 during the 2006 season. She also averages 12.0 rebounds, 2.7 blocks, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per contest.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year could also win her second straight DPOY award as she ranks first in the WNBA in blocks per game and third in steals per game. Wilson is the only player in the league to rank top-five in both BPG and SPG.
Las Vegas has already punched its ticket to the playoffs, largely due to A'ja Wilson's efforts on both ends of the floor. Their record may have declined from last season, but with Wilson at the helm, the Aces are still second in WNBA title odds, per FanDuel.
