Historic moment unfolds in Phoenix as the ‘Diana Taurasi Court’ unveiled in presence of Mercury stars

Diana Taurasi is one of the oldest players to still be playing in the WNBA. She is one of the original stars of the game who brought the league forward to the public eye and urged them to watch women's sports both with her words and her game. Taurasi is a three-time WNBA champion and a career-long player for the Phoenix Mercury.

To honor her loyalty and her contributions to the WNBA and women's basketball in general, the Mercury unveiled the 'Diana Taurasi Court' at the team's new practice facility in Phoenix. ESPN uploaded a video of the unveiling featuring the veteran guard and many other Mercury stars.

The video starts with Taurasi counting down from 10 as the Phoneix Mercury mascot walked to and fro on the court. As she reached three, the mascot grabbed the veil covering the on-court inscription of the Mercury star. On the count of one, the mascot removed the cloth, uncovering the design with Taurasi's name on the court. She then celebrated the moment with Brittney Griner and other teammates who were present at the ceremony.

The on-court design is a simple inscription on the hardwood featuring a Taurasi's silhouette stretching her arms wide open and the words 'Diana Taurasi Court' across it. Lastly, she took some photographs with her teammates and the Mercury staff present to celebrate the moment.

Diana Taurasi aims to become the first basketball player with 6 gold medals

Diana Taurasi was named to the USA's National Women's basketball team set to participate in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. The 42-year-old veteran guard had previously joked about returning to the international tournament again during the last Olympics in Tokyo.

However, arguably no one would have thought that she would turn that vague statement into a reality and compete for yet another gold medal with the national team:

"I don't love how my last Olympics went personally. I think as a team we still have a lot to prove. I love playing USA Basketball. You play with the best in the world. Basketball is a team sport and if you have the opportunity to play with the best in the world, I'll always sign up," Taurasi said in an interview with the Associated Press.

If the USA women's national team can recreate their gold medal run just like the previous Olympics, Diana Taurasi would become the first basketball player in history to have six Olympic gold medals under her name, further etching her into the history books as one of the greatest to ever play the game.
