Ellie the Elephant, the New York Liberty's mascot, had a busy Sunday when her team beat the Minnesota Lynx 80-66 to tie the 2024 WNBA Finals after losing the series opener in overtime. The Liberty players were locked in knowing that they had to win this game to keep their championship hopes alive, which they did.
Ellie did her part, too, even if that meant beefing with the father of one of the Lynx players. The Liberty's mascot had a run-in with guard Courtney Williams' dad, who was sitting in the stands.
Ellie went at it with a couple of fans, opening her arms and seemingly flinching at Williams' dad while the Liberty fans hyped her up.
Ellie did her job trying to get under her opponents' skin, but the Liberty also carried out their job and dominated the Lynx to take Game 2, tie the series and make it clear that they won't go down without a fight.
Led by Breanna Stewart (21 points), Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (20 points) and Sabrina Ionescu (15 points), the Liberty made a statement, and now the series should get more entertaining at Target Center.
WNBA fans react to New York Liberty's mascot beefing with Courtney Williams' dad
Ellie the Elephant caught a lot of attention thanks to her antics, and several fans reacted to her beef with Courtney Williams' father. A couple laughed at the Liberty's mascot knocking the man's hat off.
"Now Ellie why you knock that man hat off 😭," one fan posted.
"not she knocked his hat off 😂," another fan wrote.
Other reactions varied between warning her about Courtney Williams, saying she was messy and calling her the best mascot in sports.
"Hands down the best mascot in sports right now," one fans tweeted.
"Leave that man alone, Ellie. When Courtney catches you 😭🤭," another fan wrote.
Another person said Spike Lee should join the party and support the Liberty's mascot against the Minnesota mascot.
The 2024 WNBA Finals haven't disappointed. Game 1 had a little bit of everything, even overtime and a 95-93 comeback win from the Lynx. The second matchup was entertaining as well, but it wasn't as close and hard-fought as its predecessor.
Game 3 on Wednesday should be another show, as whoever takes that one will be one game away from winning this year's WNBA championship.
