Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx tied their 2024 WNBA playoff semifinal matchup against the Connecticut Sun after a big 77-70 win in Game 2. It was an intense contest as both teams played defense and used physicality throughout the game.
There were at least three physical altercations between Lynx and Sun players, which can be seen below. Minnesota had to fight for the win and fly to Connecticut with the series at 1-1. Games 3 and 4 will be at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
Here are three dustups that happened in Game 2 at the Target Center in Minneapolis:
Napheesa Collier vs. Marina Mabrey
The first was between Napheesa Collier and Marina Mabrey and it happened around four minutes left in the first half. Collier and Mabrey scrambled for the loose ball, but the MVP runner-up didn't appreciate the Sun star's aggressiveness.
Collier immediately stood up but officials and their teammates immediately came to the rescue and stopped the incident from escalating. Mabrey laughed it off although Myisha Hines-Allen was fuming against other Connecticut players.
Kayla McBride vs. Marina Mabrey
The second incident happened less than two minutes later during a fastbreak involving Kayla McBride and Marina Mabrey. McBride made a layup over Mabrey, who got hit with an errant elbow to the jaw.
The Lynx star started taunting the sharpshooting guard, who didn't like the gesture and pushed her opponent off. One of the referees was not having any of it so he called a technical foul on McBride.
Kayla McBride vs. DiJonai Carrington
Quite possibly the most physical play of the game, it happened with less than five minutes left. DiJonai Carrington was driving to the basket when Kayla McBride forcefully grabbed the ball from her, leading to a hard landing.
Carrington was unhappy with the physical nature of the play and tried to go at McBride before Marina Mabrey became a peacekeeper. Some fans even warned the Lynx players to watch out for her fingernails.
The Lynx held on to the lead in the third and fourth quarters, led by Courtney Williams' 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Napheesa Collier praises teammates after Lynx's Game 2 win
Speaking to reporters after their Game 2 win, Napheesa Collier had nothing but kind words for her teammates who stepped up to help even the series. Collier did it all except score, finishing with just nine points on 3-for-12 from the field. She had 12 rebounds, five assists, a steal and four blocks.
"We came ready to play, to defend the home court. I just needed to help the team any way I can. … It's going to be a long series. It's hard. We have to grind it out," Collier said. [The Star Tribune]
Game 3 of the semifinal series is on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in the Uncasville area of Montville, Connecticut. It will be televised on ESPN2, with tip-off scheduled at 7:30 p.m. EST.
