Connecticut Sun fans had plenty to celebrate during their dominant 93-69 Game 1 victory over the Indiana Fever. Guard Marina Mabrey was particularly stunned by a defensive play from fellow guard DiJonai Carrington.
Carrington, drafted 20th overall in the 2021 WNBA Draft, has steadily improved each year with the Sun. She is enjoying the best season of her career, setting personal bests in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
Standing at 5-foot-11, Carrington showed off her skills in the Sun's Game 1 win, including a highlight chase-down block on 6-foot-4 Fever center Temi Fagbenle in the fourth quarter. Marina Mabrey was left in awe of the play.
Sun teammates could also be just as impressed with Marina Mabrey’s performance, as she led the team with a game-high 27 points, hitting five 3-pointers in their Game 1 victory.
Her 27 points set a new WNBA playoff record for the most points scored off the bench, according to the league.
Marina Mabrey has been a key asset for the Sun since being traded from the Chicago Sky in exchange for Moriah Jefferson, Rachel Banham, a 2025 first-round pick and 2026 draft considerations.
She averaged 14.9 points, 3.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds for the Sun in the regular season, shooting an impressive 42.4% from three in just 27 minutes per game.
Marina Mabrey’s historic night brings the Sun closer to the WNBA semifinals
Marina Mabrey's record-setting 27 points came on 9-of-20 shooting, including 5-of-12 from beyond the arc. She also went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, adding three assists and three rebounds for a plus-minus rating of plus-20, second highest on the team.
The Sun are now a win away from reaching the semifinals.
DeWanna Bonner led the Sun with a plus-22 rating, contributing 22 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocks. She shot 7-for-11 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and was flawless from the line, hitting all six free throws.
Alyssa Thomas showcased her point guard abilities, recording a triple-double with 12 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds, despite struggling from the field with 6-for-15 shooting. And adise from her highlight-reel block, Carrington also chipped in with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the victory.
On the Fever’s side, Caitlin Clark had a tough night, managing only 11 points on 4-for-17 shooting, including 2-for-13 from three, but she dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 21 points, while Aliyah Boston contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Game 2 will take place in Connecticut on Tuesday, Sept. 24, with Game 3 scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, in Indiana, if necessary.
