LA Sparks first-round picks Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson made an appearance at the Dodger Stadium on Monday to throw the first pitch for the LA Dodgers' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Brink and Jackson, who made their WNBA debuts just a week earlier, were invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch, with Jackson also making the "It's time for Dodger baseball" announcement.
According to MLB.com, Cameron Brink received advice from superstar Shohei Ohtani for her first pitch.
Watch their first pitch below:
Dodgers outfielder Miguel Vargas caught Brink’s pitch, which was right over the plate, while Jackson's pitch went wide to Dodgers pitcher Bobby Miller.
Jackson said that being invited to throw the first pitch as WNBA players was very meaningful to her.
“For them to even want to bring us out, this means a lot,” Jackson said (per MLB.com). “The support we’ve gotten from LA, we’re just grateful to be here.”
Jackson expressed her happiness at witnessing the growth of the WNBA as a rookie and said that the veterans who have been part of the sport deserves greater recognition.
“It’s been amazing. I feel like it’s about time. It’s just going to keep growing, but I feel like I’m more happy for the vets, they’re the ones that deserve it all.”
Cameron Brink recalls encounter with Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard
Cameron Brink, on an episode of "Podcast P," hosted by fellow LA basketball star Paul George, discussed various basketball and off-court topics, including Kawhi Leonard.
Brink, who, like Leonard, is a New Balance athlete, shared how amusing Leonard can be despite his nonchalant demeanor, even suggesting that he could be the male version of Aubrey Plaza due to his dry humor.
“He (Kawhi) is funny as s**t. … And all the New Balance guys, like out head marketing guy was like, ‘We haven’t seen anybody make him laugh more than you’. So, I was like, give me my flowers. Kawhi, if you’re watching this.”
George agreed:
"That’s what people don’t understand, Kawhi is actually one of the funniest human beings."
Cameron Brink and the LA Sparks are winless in their 2024 season, having lost their first two games.
Brink has averaged 7.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in her first two games. In her debut against the Atlanta Dream, she scored 11 points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out four assists in 20 minutes.
In her next game against the Las Vegas Aces, she managed just three points but recorded eight rebounds and five blocks in 25 minutes.
