Hours after securing the first unanimous MVP award in the WNBA since 1997, A'ja Wilson led the Las Vegas Aces to victory in Game 1 of their Round 1 series against the Seattle Storm, 78-67.
Rapper Swae Lee was present after the game to congratulate Wilson on her MVP and for winning in the first game of the playoffs. The 'Sunflower' hit-maker sat courtside wearing custom trousers showcasing Chicago Bulls MVP winners, Derrick Rose and Michael Jordan.
A'ja Wilson and Swae Lee were engaged in a brief but apparently jovial conversation that ended with them posing for a shot together in front of the cameras.
Swae Lee also posed for photographs with the other Aces players, which were posted on the Las Vegas Aces X (formerly Twitter) account.
A'ja Wilson extended her streak of 20-point playoff games to 13, scoring 21 points and blocking five shots to showcase her overall dominance. Despite a difficult first half where she scored only four points, as the Seattle Storm put the clamps on her, she rebounded strongly in the second half, scoring 17 of her game-high 21 points.
Even as she struggled to make shots in the first half, A'ja Wilson's solid defensive impact never waned, and she contributed significantly to the Aces' post defense. The two-time defending champion Aces were held close by the Seattle Storm until the end of the third quarter.
However, all the offensive momentum shifted in Las Vegas' favor in the fourth quarter, as their stifling defense shut down the Storm almost entirely. Kelsey Plum broke out of her shooting slump to give Las Vegas the lead with 7:04 left in the final period, cutting back the 65-64 lead the Storm had taken into the fourth quarter.
A'ja Wilson defensively inspires fourth quarter masterclass in Game 1
The Aces executed a defensive masterclass in the fourth period, nearly holding the Seattle Storm scoreless, allowing just two points in the entire 10 minutes. Seattle attempted 12 field goals, but A'ja Wilson and the Aces' enterprising guards stifled their offense.
This turnaround was made even more impressive by the fact that the Aces trailed 18-9 in the first quarter. According to Aces coach Becky Hammon, some tough love was required to turn the situation around.
"“Defense…once we get stops we know we’re off to the races…we’re good when we run out of our defense and we put a couple lineups out there that are fast” - Becky Hammon on Aces' Fourth Quarter comeback.
The Las Vegas Aces will look to build on this momentum in Game 2 against the Storm, scheduled for September 25 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Nevada.
