Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington spoke on her mindset and priorities as she enters free agency. According to Sara Gamelli of Ballislife.com on Thursday, Carrington emphasized that her primary focus is on continuing to improve her game and skills.
"My focus right now is to continue to develop my game and my skills," Carrington said. "Hopefully teams will see that and my team obviously knows that. We'll see where it takes us."
The 2024 Kia Most Improved Player is expected to draw significant interest from teams around the league. Her current team can, however, match any offer she receives. But Kevin Pelton of ESPN asserted that the Sun need to match "the $82,754 qualifying offer" or she becomes a restricted free agent.
She ended the 2024 regular season with 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game, helping the Sun secure the third seed.
DiJonai Carrington's 2025 free agency prospects
DiJonai Carrington helped the Sun to the second seed in the Eastern Conference in 2024 and a semi-final appearance in the postseason, making her one of the most sought-after players in the league.
Carrington's ability as a two-way player could likely be what potential suitors look for. Additionally, her reputation as one of the league's best perimeter defenders adds to her value next to her four years of W experience.
Bottom-of-the-barrel teams could benefit extensively from going after Carrington. Teams like the Washington Mystics, Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings and Los Angeles Sparks all had poor campaigns last season. Going after a player like Carrington (27) could serve as a long-term solution on both ends of the floor.
The Sky particularly stand as an intriguing destination. Heading to Chicago means Carrington will team up with sophomore sensation Angel Reese, who had an impressive rookie season in 2024. She averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds across 34 games.
