On Thursday morning, news emerged that Breanna Stewart is co-founding a three-on-three women's league next year. Along with the announcement, the former WNBA MVP took to social media to add to the hype.
Stewart re-posted a hype video from the new 'Unrivaled' league on her Instagram story. She had a befitting response for the naysayers who thought something like this wasn't possible.
"What IF they said we couldn't, but we did! See you in Miami. January 2025," Stewart wrote on Instagram.
Stewart, 29, has been one of the WNBA's top talents since being drafted first overall in 2016. She started her career with the Seattle Storm, but then made the decision to join the New York Liberty in 2023.
Stewart has a long list of accolades, including being a five-time All-Star, two-time MVP and two-time WNBA champion.
Along with the Liberty star, this new league will also be co-founded by Napheesa Collier. She is another All-Star talent in the WNBA, currently playing for the Minnesota Lynx. Collier was also a top pick, being selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft.
NBA insider details on Breanna Stewart's new basketball league
Shams Charania was among the first to break the news about Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier founding a three-on-three league.
One of the biggest points mentioned was that it would set a record for the highest average salary in female sports.
As of now, there has been no information on which players will be participating in this new venture.
This new league will not be a rival to the WNBA. In fact, the season will take place during the off-season. Typically, most WNBA players spend the winter playing professionally overseas. However, this new league could end up being a lucrative alternative for some.
Along with a chance to stay in the US during the offseason, the inaugural group of players will also get equity in the league.
This is not the first time that we've seen a three-on-three league surface in the basketball world. In 2017, hip-hop legend Ice Cube launched the "Big3." This three-on-three league consists of a wide range of former NBA players.
New ventures like this are a testament to the rapid growth in popularity women's basketball has seen in recent years. Thanks to Stewart and Collier, players will have a chance to raise their earning potential while bringing new fans to the women's game.
