For years, the WNBA has had to deal with backlash and mockery. From fan criticism to literal objectification of women, it hasn't been an easy ride for the players, the fans, and the league as a whole.
The recent uptick in popularity has done wonders to change that narrative. Unfortunately, some of the old ways refuse to go away.
Earlier in the year, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal was under heavy fire for telling Angel Reese to dunk in short shorts as a marketing stunt.
Now, internet personality Charleston White doubled down on that statement, this time on Jeff Teague's "Club 520" podcast:
"I'm with Shaq," White said. "Dunk in some p***ies with no bra on. That's how you sell tickets. We need an OnlyF**s WNBA, then I'll tune in."
A fan took offense at the comments and called out Shannon Sharpe, who seemingly sponsors the show, for allowing that to air:
"Shannon Sharpe sir that’s your LOGO you’re BRAND… why let the Club 520 Podcast bring Charleston White to speak inappropriately about WNBA players… should I start tagging corporate sponsors or what… maybe the WNBA needa ban ya’ll," the infuriated fan said.
Then, another fan chimed in to challenge that narrative, defending Sharpe from criticism after being dragged into this conversation:
"Where was this energy when Pat McAfee called Caitlin Clark a 'white b***h.' Y'all didn't care about women then. Y'all didn't report to Draft Kings when that happened," one fan responded.
"Didn't see not one black woman goin to great lengths to take down his podcasts like y'all doin teague. And no it wasn't an uproar. Y'all swept it under the rug clown," he added later.
Of course, it shouldn't take long before the show issues some sort of statement or apology after this now-viral clip.
Charleston White had already taken a shot at Angel Reese
Notably, this isn't the first time that White has taken a big shot at Reese. Following Kamala Harris' loss to Donald Trump in the Presidential election, he took another uncalled-for shot at her:
"She can't do nothing but play basketball," he said about Reese, who expressed her disappointment over the results. "Angel Reese might as well start selling pu**y. She don't want to play basketball; she wants to h**."
With such controversial and offensive statements in the past as well, White seems to be a repeat offender. This time though, fans are not letting the insults go unanswered.
