Saturday's China vs. Puerto Rico game will mark the final of the Group Phase for both teams. Both went winless in their first two games at the 2024 Paris Olympics. While some hoped China would make some waves thanks to Meng Li and Xu Han, the team struggled to find its rhythm since arriving in Paris.
China narrowly lost its first game of the Group Phase to Spain in a nail-biter that went to overtime, before losing a lopsided meeting against Serbia on Jul. 31. On the flip side, Puerto Rico has repeatedly shown it can compete with the best. However, it has been unable to secure a win at the Olympics.
The team lost its first game of the Group Phase on Jul. 28 to Serbia after a late-game comeback saw Los Gallos outscore Serbia 19-3 in the fourth quarter. Despite the comeback attempt, Puerto Rico lost its opening game 58-55 before falling to Spain on Jul. 31 in another closely contested game.
With both teams still looking for their first Olympics win, the stakes couldn't be higher heading into Saturday's game.
