The Indiana Fever will look to get the better of the seasoned Phoenix Mercury outfit when they play their first game following the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday (Aug.16). Caitlin Clark and a young Fever team had the better of Phoenix in both meetings this season, including the Fever racking up a 95-86 win in July. Both teams are gunning for a playoff berth this season.
Indiana resumes their season placed seventh overall, while the Mercury is one rung above, in sixth. The Fever added a win to restart their season, blowing out the Chicago Sky 85-65 at the Wintrust Arena on Thursday. While they are a formidable unit on paper, they are on a back-to-back road run.
It was a Kahleah Copper and Brittney Griner show in Chicago. The guard scored 29 points on her return to her former team, while veteran Griner recorded 23 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
Her efforts saw her hit a landmark, becoming the first player in franchise history to record at least 20 points, five boards, five dimes and five blocks in a game, while Diana Taurasi chipped in with 11 points.
The Fever are dark horses to make the postseason, rediscovering their mojo after going 1-8 to start the season. Improved offense and better ball movement have been their hallmark after a rough start. A string of wins will set the tone for a finish with a flourish, while the Mercury will look to capitalize on their winning start.
