Spain and Belgium will meet in a highly anticipated matchup at the 2024 Paris Olympics women's basketball event on Wednesday. The quarter-final game should provide plenty of entertainment with some of the game's biggest stars on display.

Belgium is still in search of its first Olympic medal in women's basketball. The women's team appeared in their first Olympic Games in 2020, losing out in the quarter-finals stage in a closely contested game against Japan.

It has been eight years since Spain won the silver medal at the Olympics women's basketball tournament in Rio de Janeiro, but several of the players from that side have returned for this event.

The winner of this matchup will face either Germany or France in the semifinal round.

Spain vs Belgium Olympics women's basketball preview

Despite winning all three group-stage games, Spain enters the quarter-final against Belgium as slight underdogs. Miguel Mendez's side has been underwhelming in the opening phase, scrapping through with one-point wins against China and Puerto Rico before securing an eight-point victory over Serbia.

Megan Gustafson will have to be at her best if the Spanish are to pull off an upset in Paris. She averaged double-doubles in her first three starts with 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. Gustafson was remarkable in her team's opening encounter versus China, where she finished with 29 points, shooting 14-21 from the field.

Belgium struggled with back-to-back losses against the USA and Germany. They edged their way into the knockout phase with a dominant 85-58 over Japan. Only a 27-point win would have sufficed for Belgium, and they managed to get the result they needed in the final stages of the fourth quarter.

Emma Meesseman will look to continue her red-hot form on Wednesday as Belgium looks to make their second consecutive Olympics quarter-finals. No player has come close to her average of 26.3 points per game.
