USA Basketball announced early this year that Cheryl Reeve will remain the women’s national team head coach. Reeve retained the staff that helped her guide the Americans to an 8-0 run at the 2022 FIBA World Cup. She will continue to have Mike Thibault, Kara Lawson and Joni Taylor as her assistant coaches.
USAB’s Jim Tooley had this to say when the coaching staff for the women’s basketball team that will compete in Paris later this month:
“After winning the gold in Sydney, it’s exciting to have Mike, Kara and Joni once again joining Cheryl and the USA Women’s National Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"Our staff has decades of diverse coaching experience and I’m looking forward to watching them lead our women’s team with the goal of winning an eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal.”
Cheryl Reeve and her coaching staff will guide a group of WNBA stars heavily favored to dominate the competition in Paris. The Americans will be gunning for their eighth Olympic gold medal. The last time they didn’t finish at the top was in 1992 when the “Unified Team” topped the competition.
The 2024 Paris Olympics USA Women's Basketball team has experienced coaches
Cheryl Reeve was part of the coaching staff that won the 2016 and 2020 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Japan, respectively. She was also the main playcaller for both the 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournament and the proper World Cup competition in Sydney. A gold at the Summer Games in Paris will only add to her glittering resume.
Mike Thibault’s coaching career spans three decades. He won bronze in the 2006 FIBA World Cup in Brazil before bagging gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Thibault was a three-time WNBA Coach of the Year and won the championship in 2019. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach in the NBA and lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy twice (1980 and 1982) in that capacity.
Kara Lawson has won Olympic gold medals both as a player and as a coach. She led Team USA in scoring in the gold medal game versus Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She was the head coach of the Americans’ 3x3 women’s national team that topped the Tokyo Olympics.
Joni Taylor was the head coach of the American women’s basketball team that routed the competition in the FIBA -u19 World Cup. She served in the same capacity for the University of Georgia for seven years before taking on the Texas A&M job.
Cheryl Reeve has a ton of experience behind her for the Paris Olympics.
