The Indiana Fever will return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Behind Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, the Fever finished with a 20-20 record. They earned the No. 6 seed before their last regular season game against the Washington Mystics on Thursday.
Hosting the Fever in the first round of the playoffs are the battle-tested Connecticut Sun. Alyssa Thomas and Co. lost to Indiana in their last duel but the No. 3 team in the playoffs won the season series 3-1. The Sun are favorites to advance past the Fever.
Clark and her teammates, however, have been playing much better since the Olympic break. They had a 10-4 record after ending mid-July with an 11-15 win-loss slate. The Sun can’t expect the same team they overwhelmed in two of their wins.
Should the Indiana Fever pull off an upset, the road will only get tougher.
Indiana Fever could meet the Minnesota Lynx or the Phoenix Mercury in the semifinals
The series winner between the Minnesota Lynx (2) and the Phoenix Mercury (7) will be the Indiana Fever’s semifinal-round opponent. Minnesota is the heavy favorite to move to the next round against Phoenix. MVP candidate Napheesa Collier and Co. have often looked like the best team in the WNBA this season.
The Lynx had a 17-8 record when WNBA action stopped for the Olympics. Once the league resumed, they were even better than ever, capping off their season with a 13-2 stretch. Some consider Minnesota the biggest threat to the Las Vegas Aces’ attempt at a three-peat.
If the Fever move past the Connecticut Sun, the beast from Minnesota will likely be waiting for them.
Could the Indiana Fever continue their fairytale run to the WNBA Finals?
If the Indiana Fever can beat the Minnesota Lynx in a five-game series, that might be the biggest upset in the WNBA playoffs. Playing their first playoff since 2016, Fever will take on a team that has made the postseason in 14 of the last 15 seasons. Minnesota won the championship in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
Indiana won one out of three regular-season games against Minnesota. Beating the Lynx isn’t impossible but highly improbable. The WNBA Finals will be next for them if they can slay the beast.
Should the Fever reach the championship round, they could face the Breanna Stewart-led New York Liberty, the No. 1 team in the regular season. Alternatively, Indiana could square off against A’ja Wilson and the three-peat-looking Las Vegas Aces
