The Chicago Sky have ruled out Chennedy Carter for Tuesday’s crucial showdown against the Atlanta Dream. Carter, who leads the Sky in scoring with 17.5 points per game this season, wasn’t on the injury report heading into the game. She was a late scratch due to a foot injury.
Before being held out against the Dream, Carter had played in five successive games. She returned from a one-week absence after she was put under the WNBA’s health and safety protocols. The Sky snapped a seven-game losing skid immediately after the feisty guard suited up again for coach Teresa Weatherspoon.
Carter didn't appear to be troubled by injury in the Sky’s 93-88 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday. She led her team in scoring with 20 points and added four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 34 minutes.
Chennedy Carter joins four other players on Chicago’s injury report
Before the game against the Atlanta Dream, Elizabeth Williams (knee) and Angel Reese (wrist) were ruled out. Kamilla Cardoso (shoulder) and Diamond DeShields (ankle) were questionable. Chennedy Carter looked like she would need to have a big night to help the Sky get a crucial win. Instead, Chicago also held her out.
Without the quartet, Weatherspoon will have to rely on Michaela Onyenwere, Rachel Banham, Isabelle Harrison and Dana Evans.
When Carter will return is anybody’s guess. Her injury could not have come at a worse time for the Sky who are still in contention for the playoffs. A win on Tuesday would keep their postseason hopes alive. Teresa Weatherspoon’s group must also beat the Connecticut Sun on Thursday and hope the Washington Mystics lose their remaining two games.
If the Sky can pull off an upset against the Atlanta Dream, Carter might have a chance of returning versus Connecticut. A loss to the Dream likely ends the season for her.
Chennedy Carter is a restricted free agent after this season
Chennedy Carter signed a camp invite from the Chicago Sky in February. She will become a restricted free agent after 2024, allowing Chicago to keep her if it matches any team's offer.
Even if she can't suit up again this year, there's a chance she will be back with her current team in 2025.
