The Chicago Sky will face the Washington Mystics without one of their best players, Chennedy Carter. The veteran guard, who has become a strong candidate to win the Most Improved Player of the Year award, won't be available for Wednesday's game due to health protocols.
This is a significant update for the Sky, as Carter has become one of the leaders of the squad with her game and actions. After a rocky return to action, posting 12.5 points per game, she bounced back and averaged 22.0 ppg last week, although the Sky couldn't win a single game.
It's unclear what type of illness Carter is suffering from, but it's serious enough to prevent her from playing against the Mystics in what could be a key game for the Sky's WNBA playoffs aspirations.
In 28 games, Chennedy Carter averaged 17.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 2.8 apg, shooting 50% from the field and 74.5% from the free-throw line. The four-year veteran went from signing a training camp deal to becoming the best scorer on the Sky, and her absence would be a big blow for her teammates.
The Chicago Sky canceled Tuesday practice
Before the Sky ruled out Chennedy Carter for tomorrow's game, Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Sky suddenly canceled Tuesday practice after several players felt sick.
The team's medical staff advised player to wear masks at facilities, as this unknown illness took everybody by surprise. The team's general manager went on to say that they tested players for COVID while they wait for updates from the doctors.
"We're testing for COVID-19 and speaking with our doctors to hear what they would suggest progression-wise," Jeff Pagliocca said.
He added that they'll have enough players to take on the Sky, but it's unclear which players have been affected by this illness besides Carter. The Washington Mystics presented a good opportunity for the Sky to snap a three-game skid and get things back on track.
With the Atlanta Dream hunting them for that eighth playoff spot, the Sky need to start winning again, but without Chennedy Carter, the job will be harder to complete. She became a key member of the Sky this season, and not having her on the court tomorrow could hurt their chances to beat the Mystics.
