WNBA reporter Christine Brennan found her name in headlines repeatedly since the start of the 2024 WNBA playoffs. Initially, Brennan was in headlines after the WNBPA took aim at her for a line of questioning while speaking with DiJonai Carrington during the Connecticut Sun's first-round series against the Indiana Fever.
On the heels of the initial controversy, Brennan found her name in headlines once again this week after a run-in with fellow Connecticut Sun standout DeWanna Bonner.
According to various reports, after the Connecticut Sun's game with the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, DeWanna Bonner approached Brennan. During an episode of the "Good Game with Sarah Spain" podcast, Brennan opened up to host Sarah Spain about the exchange, saying:
“I would not call it heated. I would call it a person coming up to talk to me.”
A follow-up from Spain posted on Monday morning to X, formerly known as Twitter, then alleged that Christine Brennan filed a complaint with the WNBA regarding the exchange she had with Bonner.
In response, Christine Brennan then fired back, refuting claims that she filed a complaint with the league:
"Hi Sarah, this is inaccurate. It is false. I have not filed a complaint. I have not contacted anyone at the league. Your sources are wrong. You and I have had a long and good relationship which is why I always enjoy speaking with you. Why didn’t you call me before posting this?"
In a follow-up, Spain then clarified her report, explaining that Brennan didn't file a complaint with the league, but rather notified the league of the exchange with DeWanna Bonner.
DeWanna Bonner confrontation marks the latest chapter of the Christine Brennan-Connecticut Sun saga
DeWanna Bonner's post-game confrontation with Christine Brennan marked the latest chapter of the longtime reporter's ongoing saga with the Connecticut Sun. The saga began during the first-round of the WNBA Playoffs, when the Sun were facing off with the Indiana Fever.
During Game 1 of the series, DiJonai Carrington wound up hitting Caitlin Clark in the face, giving her a black eye, while attempting to deflect a pass. Moments later, Carrington was then seen laughing with one of her teammates, with some fans wondering whether the pair were laughing at Clark.
The following day, Christine Brennan asked Carrington about the situation in a brief exchange on video that lasted less than a minute, where she asked whether the blow to Clark was intentional.
After Carrington made it clear that she didn't mean to strike Clark in the face with her follow-through motion, Brennan asked whether she was laughing about the incident moments later as seen on video.
In response, the WNBPA released a strong statement taking aim at Brennan, alleging that she didn't deserve to be a credentialed media member. In addition, the statement also accused Brennan of trying to bait Carrington in order to fuel "racist, homophobic and misogynistic vitriol" online.
In response, USA Today defended Brennan, however, as we can see from the latest exchange with DeWanna Bonner, the Connecticut Sun aren't ready to let her off the hook.
