After another week down in the WNBA, there are a handful of teams who have confidently established prominent positioning in the league. Through it all, several coaches have been doing a tremendous job leading their units to victories and upholding a high standard to maintain. In the process, Cheryl Reeve has the Minnesota Lynx right in the championship mix due to their consistent style of play.
Aside from Reeve's squad, the Connecticut Sun and the New York Liberty are also in a tight race toward finishing with the best record. There's no denying the incredible opportunity presented in securing a commanding homecourt advantage in a playoff series.
While the WNBA Playoffs are still months away, it is still a good practice to establish strong footing at this stage of the season.
2024 WNBA Coach of the Year candidates
#5; Becky Hammon - Las Vegas Aces
After their 1-4 stretch in June, the Las Vegas Aces have gone back to their winning ways by going 7-1 since, courtesy of Chelsea Gray's return and the coaching of Becky Hammon. While their offense ranks high in the league (second-best), they still need to improve their consistency on the defensive end.
Considering that this is a Las Vegas team being coached by Hammon, it's only a matter of time before her squad moves up the high-ranking defensive teams' list.
#4; Noelle Quinn - Seattle Storm
Another team that picked up the winning pace after previously struggling earlier in the season is the Seattle Storm. Noelle Quinn has looked as if she has figured out the pulse of the team as they are one of the most dynamic ball clubs this season.
The Storm ranks fourth offensively and third defensively in the league.
#3; Cheryl Reeve - Minnesota Lynx
There's not much left that can be said about Cheryl Reeve's reputation in the WNBA, as she has established one of the most impressive legacies for a head coach. This season, Reeve has the Lynx playing incredible basketball where they rank in the top five in both offense and defense.
Following eight weeks of WNBA basketball, Minnesota has maintained the best defensive team (92.0 rating) which has caused headaches for opposing offenses.
#2; Sandy Brondello - New York Liberty
After a disappointing loss to Las Vegas in last year's WNBA Finals, Sandy Brondello has the New York Liberty coming out strong right from the jump this year. With no signs of slowing down, the Liberty has looked like a complete basketball team with the chance to redeem themselves by finishing the job this time around.
#1; Stephanie White - Connecticut Sun
Stephanie White established a strong winning culture with the Connecticut Sun last season and has picked up this year right where she left off. This time around, the Connecticut squad started everything off with an impressive nine-game winning streak.
They remain a dominant ball club and as similar to the Liberty, they prioritize being excellent offensively and defensively. That kind of approach to the game has given them an unmatched edge on most nights in the WNBA.
