Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s rivalry has continued to stir intense discourse in the WNBA sphere. With their impressive performances this season, the two rookies are pitted to be neck-to-neck in this season’s Rookie of the Year race.
Clark and Reese have also been making history individually this season. Indiana Fever’s Clark broke the record for most points and assists double-doubles for a rookie with four in their win versus the Liberty on July 6.
In the same game, Clark became the only rookie in WNBA history to notch a triple-double in a game. She also became the youngest WNBA player to have a triple-double, and the only Fever player ever to reach such a feat.
Meanwhile, Sky’s Angel Reese has tied the record for most consecutive double-doubles of points and rebounds with 12. Unlike Clark, Reese holds a league record, not a rookie record.
The feats only escalated the debate between the two players as teams compared their achievements in only their first season in the league.
Fans expressed their positions on the debate. On one hand, some fans cited the magnitude of Clark’s achievements, while also pointing out her efficient gameplay.
“Have to give the edge to CC on this one. The 3D was huge considering no other rookie has done that in WNBA history, but I'm glad they're both breaking records. There's room to like both, contrary to popular belief.” said one fan.
“I think Caitlin Clark is the more complete player right now. That last game against the Liberty, she brought the full package of scoring, passing and rebounding. And she moves so fast with the ball and makes the whole team contribute.” said another fan.
“Caitlin Clark is way more impactful than Angel Reese,” said one fan.
Meanwhile, others preferred the way Reese dominated the paint for the Sky, emphasizing that her records are not merely just among rookies, but also the entire WNBA.
“WNBA record > Rookie record. What you just proved is what crowd your account caters to” said one fan.
“One is a rookie record, the other is a league record.. case closed,” said another fan.
“It’s Angel. Caitlin is great but Angel is just better,” said one fan.
Clark and Reese have also made the WNBA All-Star team, becoming the only rookies from this year’s draft class to make the team. They will team up with Team WNBA in their game versus Team USA in the All-Star weekend at Phoenix on July 21.
Fever coach gives take on Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s Rookie of the Year race
After Clark’s triple-double performance versus the Liberty, Indiana Fever head coach Christie Slides openly endorsed Clark in the tight race for the Rookie of the Year award this season.
“I’m always going to make a case for my players. First and foremost, she is the most competitive human being I’ve ever met. I really compare her to Diana Taurasi. She's always looking to find ways to get better,” Sides said.
Following the game versus the Liberty, Clark bumped her average to 16.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.4 steals to lead the Fever to nine wins in 22 games this season.
Meanwhile, Reese averages 13.9 points and 11.7 rebounds to lead the league in rebounds per game. Reese is also one of the four players this season who averages a double-double in points and rebounds.
