On Thursday, the WNBA's Rookie of the Year voting was confirmed, with Indiana Fever standout Caitlin Clark being named the 2024 KIA WNBA Rookie of the Year. While the news wasn't exactly surprising given Clark's play throughout the season, what did surprise many fans was the fact that Clark was just one vote shy of being the unanimous Rookie of the Year.

According to various outlets, Clark received 66 of 67 votes for the Rookie of the Year award, with Chicago Sky standout Angel Reese receiving one vote despite playing in just 34 games throughout the season.

Given the number of records Clark set and the fact that she helped the Fever clinch their first playoff berth since 2016, many were left stunned by the news.

While Reese had a great season, breaking several records of her own, Caitlin Clark was an overwhelming betting favorite to win the award dating back to before Reese went down with an injury.

The WNBA community was quick to react to the news:

"Gotta ban whoever voted for Reese. They let too many people have votes. NBA is egregious lately too" - One wrote
"Could only imagine who the one voter was" - Another wrote
"I wanna know WHO?? Cause it had to be the same person who gave Angel a 4th place MVP vote & they need their credentials … right?" - One added

Others called for the voting panel to be made public so fans could identify who voted for Reese:

"And this is why votes should be public" - One wrote
"Make the votes public" - Another added
"release the name" - One wrote

Looking at Caitlin Clark's debut WNBA season

This season, Caitlin Clark proved that she has what it takes to compete with the best of the best in the WNBA. After a standout collegiate career that landed her as the first pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the former Iowa Hawkeye sparked a new level of fan interest around the league.

Throughout her 40 games this season, Clark averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She also shot 41.7% from the floor and 34.4% from three.

Her 8.4 assists per game average was enough to make her the league's assist leader at the end of the season, with Connecticut Sun standout Alyssa Thomas just behind with 7.9 apg.

In addition, Clark led the league in 3-pointers made per game with 3.0, followed by Arike Ogunbowale and Kelsey Plum who both tied for second place with 2.9.

Caitlin Clark set the rookie record for assists and points while being the first rookie to record a triple-double. She set the WNBA single-season record for most points by a point guard, as well as the single-season record for assists. But Clark also set the WNBA's single-game assist record with 19 and became the fastest player in league history to eclipse the 100 3-pointer mark.

At the same time, she also broke a number of franchise records for the Indiana Fever, logging the most 3-pointers, 10+ assist games, and double-doubles in a season, all of which cemented her place in Fever franchise history.

After a hard-fought 2024 season that came shortly after the end of her final season in the NCAA, Caitlin Clark will enjoy some well-deserved time off before the 2025 season.
