The All-Star Team beat Team USA 117-109 on Sunday. Following the game, The Associated Press praised Caitlin Clark and Arike Ogunbowale's efforts in leading the charge. However, ESPN writer Britni Danielle was critical of including Clark in the headline when the Fever rookie only put up four points in the contest.
Against some of the best players in the league, the Fever guard put up four points (2-of-9 shooting) and racked up 10 assists with only two turnovers. As impressive as the distribution numbers are, Danielle emphasized the lowly shooting effort from the 2023 No.1 pick.
After Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale's impressive 34-point stat line, Dream's Allisha Gray was the second leading scorer on the team with her 16-point performance. Following the post, numerous WNBA fans shared their reactions.
"You all are astoundingly miserable," one fan tweeted on X, formerly X.
"Nobody care about rebounds bro," another fan tweeted.
An X user argued Clark's 10 assists were responsible for 20 points on Team WNBA's end.
"I get what you are saying I really do and they do this all the time since 2023 but them 10 assists which was the most in game accounted for 20 points so maybe that's what they mean," the fan tweeted.
Another X user pointed out the importance of sharing the basketball to win aside from scoring outputs.
"Anyone who actually knows basketball understands it's not always about scoring! Great game to all the women," the fan tweeted.
An X user criticized the ESPN writer for feeling strongly about The Associated Press headline.
"Imagine getting so worked up over a headline," the fan tweeted.
An X user highlighted Team USA's decision to key in on Clark defensively.
"Caitlin was the focus of the defense. Took pressure off the others. You know nothing," the fan tweeted.
Caitlin Clark talked about the All-Star Team's victory over the Team USA roster
Following Team WNBA's win over Team USA, Clark was asked if the win was a statement against the ball club that didn't include her in the roster.
"No. They're really good," Clark said, per Athlon Sports' Matt Audilet. "They have plenty of talent on that team. Four years prior, Team WNBA beat Team USA — they were perfectly fine in the Olympics. If anything it shows how good this league is. It shows how much talent is in this league ..."
Despite being one of the most popular basketball athletes in the world, Clark continues to carry herself professionally while remaining respectful to her peers.
To be selected to represent one's country in the Paris Olympics indicates one's talent level compared to other players in the league. However, this didn't cross the rookie's mind as she chose to give credit to how far the WNBA's talent level has grown over the years.
