Angel Reese could have a new veteran teammate this offseason. WNBA star Courtney Vandersloot is among the top free agents in the league this offseason. After two seasons with the New York Liberty, she wants to experience playing for a different team moving forward.
The Chicago Sky, one of the teams connected to Vandersloot, reportedly visited her. Chicago Sun-Times reporter Annie Costabile claimed that the five-time All-Star spent time with Sky officials, with coach Tyler Marsh and general manager Jeff Pagliocca driving to Miami Tuesday to talk to Vandersloot.
The two-time WNBA champion is currently involved with the Mist Basketball Club in Unrivaled. Vandersloot is playing with Breanna Stewart, her former Liberty teammate and co-founder of the league.
Costabile reported that the star player wants to change how she gets involved in the offense.
"I want to have the ball in my hands and create the way I think that I can," Vandersloot said.
During the 2024 season, she had a down year despite playing 35 games. In 22.3 minutes of action, Vandersloot averaged 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. Her numbers from last season were close to what she averaged during her rookie season, where she earned her first All-Star nod.
However, playing alongside Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu has caused her numbers to drop. In the 2023 season, Vandersloot averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 8.1 assists in 39 games.
Returning to the Sky is possible as the franchise opted not to offer Chennedy Carter a qualifying extension. Last season, Carter was the team's leading scorer. Given their lack of involvement in her free agency journey, the Chicago franchise could turn to their former star player to return.
The soon-to-be 36-year-old guard could serve as a veteran leader for their franchise star, Reese.
How did Vandersloot perform for Angel Reese's Sky?
Before the Angel Reese era, Courtney Vandersloot ran the show in Chicago with Diamond DeShields. The point guard spent 12 seasons playing for the Sky (2011-2022) and became one of the best facilitators. In her first season, she quickly earned her first All-Star nod.
The point guard helped the franchise become a consistent playoff team in the following seasons. Their dreams of winning the championship came true during the 2021 season.
During her time with the Sky, she averaged 10.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 6.6 assists. Her passing was recognized and Vandersloot was the league's assist leader six times. She also made all five of her All-WNBA teams in Chicago.
