After a disappointing end to the 2024 WNBA season, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2018, the Chicago Sky could look to bolster their team around Angel Reese. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, general manager Jeff Pagliocca may look to add former Sky star Courtney Vandersloot in free agency.

The Sky drafted Vandersloot third overall in 2011 and she spent the first 12 seasons of her career in Chicago. The star point guard played an integral role for the Sky in their first WNBA title run in 2021.

Courtney Vandersloot parted ways with Chicago when she signed a two-year, $383,670 deal with the New York Liberty in 2023. She is currently an unrestricted free agent and expressed to the media that she wants to be with a team where she's valued.

"I want to be valued. I want to be competitive," Vandersloot said earlier this week. "I want to have the ball in my hands and be able to create the way that I think that I can, you know, and just be in a place that is comfortable for me and my family.”

Courtney Vandersloot averaged 6.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists in the regular season while shooting 44.5% from the field, including 26.9% from beyond the arc. She ended up winning her second WNBA title, but did not feature heavily in the playoffs.

Angel Reese reacts to teammate being snubbed by Chicago Sky ahead of free agency

With the WNBA free agency set to officially begin on Jan. 21, the Chicago Sky extended qualifying offers to Dana Evans, Michaela Onyenwere and Nikolina Milic. However, they didn't offer an extension to their top scorer from last season, Chennedy Carter, who is set to hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.

Angel Reese took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a cryptic tweet shortly afterward.

"Everything happens for a reason," Angel Reese tweeted.

WNBA insider Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times shared the Sky may not have extended an offer to Carter citing her commitment to the team on and off the court.

"There are questions about her commitment to the team on the court and its culture off it that could contribute to the Sky being unwilling to even make the offer," said Costabile.

The Chicago Sky seem to be undergoing a major rebuild around Angel Reese for the upcoming season, with big moves anticipated during the free agency. They hired Tyler Marsh to replace Teresa Wutherspoon for the head coach position and also have the third overall pick for the 2025 WNBA draft.
