Former Dallas Wings star Satou Sabally announced her decision to move on from the team ahead of WNBA free agency this offseason last week. Sabally will hit the market as a restricted free agent after spending the last five seasons in Dallas.
Sabally's sister, Nyara, is entering her fourth WNBA season with the New York Liberty, which prompted league insiders Terrika Foster-Brasby and Natalie Esquire to list New York as a potential landing spot in free agency on Tuesday.
"I know I certainly thought over the course of New York's championship run (Satou Sabally looked) real comfortable in New York," Froster-Brasby said. "You looked real comfortable putting that championship shirt on."
The Liberty have just six players under contract for next season and are expected to core Breanna Stewart, who is likely to sign the one-year tender to remain in New York. They will gear up for a third consecutive run to the WNBA Finals, and Satou Sabally could be in contention.
The team has nearly $700,000 in cap space, which will certainly keep them in play for a number of veteran free agents.
Satou Sabally cored by Wings, Liberty trade not out of question
New York will certainly be a top destination for some of the best WNBA free agents this offseason, but it will have to work out a deal to land Satou Sabally. The Wings cored Sabally, which means the Wings have exclusive negotiating rights to her.
Still, a trade isn't out of the question. The Liberty have several assets they could move to land the two-time All-Star. Not to mention, Sabally could slide seamlessly into the starting role while providing an immediate upgrade.
She is coming off one of the best seasons of her career, averaging 17.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 42.6%, including 45.2% from 3-point range. With Sabally out in Dallas, several teams will line up to land the 2023 Most Improved Player.
New York will likely be a massive buyer this offseason, with Sabally the first player linked to the team during the period.
