WNBA fans weren't happy after Phoenix Mercury veteran Natasha Cloud said that the league has been a safe place in its 28 years of history.
Cloud took to X on Saturday to send a message to "fans of all major young players". She recommended people "to go outside" before trying to hurt another person's feelings, especially projecting 'racism, sexism, bigotry and homophobia'.
She added that what makes the W special is that it has been a safe space since its inception.
These remarks didn't sit well with a lot of people. Plenty of fans brought up the receipts with some of the controversies the league and its teams have been involved in during these years.
One person shared screenshots of Candice Wiggins, Skyla Diggins-Smith, Sabrina Ionescu and Dearica Hamby's issues in the league.
"The WNBA has NEVER been a safe space, it's toxic & We're not letting oldheads break the spirit of the new generation," one fan said.
"Why do y'all keep saying the W was a safe space 😂😂 that's 🧢 .. people just didn't watch enough to care about the bullshit that was going on. Now that the eyes on y'all it's clear as day y'all don't be about nun of that shit y'all be saying fr 👎🏾," another fan said.
"The wnba was never a safe space. Stop Lying," another fan wrote.
Others noted Kelsey Plum saying that black players wanted to 'take her head off', the Chennedy Carter and Caitlin Clark incident and Breanna Stewart with a black eye. They also brought up Sue Bird, saying that the bad behavior didn't start this season.
"as sue bird said racism, sexism, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia was a problem in the wnba before this year," one fan wrote.
"wnba players should put the phone down too the way y'all react to every negative comment yall see," another fan said.
WNBA fans had attacked Phoenix Mercury announcer before Natasha Cloud
Back in September, before Natasha Cloud's post, Phoenix Mercury announcer Cindy Brunson was under the spotlight.
This was after fans found out that she laughed at the appearance of an Iowa women's basketball player on social media. She had earlier said that Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever needed to do a better job protecting women in the W.
Even though she's tried to stay away from controversy whenever she's been asked about the behavior of some fans, Clark has called them out. Yet, she has been the subject of criticism by people saying she didn't do enough to silence the trolls.
