The New York Liberty head into the Olympic break as the team at the top spot in Week 10 of our WNBA Power Rankings. NY ended the past week with an 82-74 win over the Connecticut Sun to extend their winning streak to three games. Below them are the Sun, followed by the Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, and the Las Vegas Aces.
While these five teams have dominated in the last couple of weeks, there's a lot to watch out for as the Phoenix Suns and the Indiana Fever have positioned themselves as playoff contenders. They are sixth and seventh in the overall WNBA standings, with Indiana making a solid rally after their poor start to the season. The Mercury has blown hot and cold but has held its ground to stay in the hunt.
With that, here's a look at the top five teams cutting our weekly updated WNBA power rankings. The New York Liberty sit pretty on top with the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in fifth place.
WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. New York Liberty (Week 10)
#5 Las Vegas Aces | Overall record: 16-8 | Last 10 games: 8-2
The Las Vegas Aces ended their Week 10 run on a damp note losing 93-85 to the Chicago Sky. Before the loss, they had carved themselves a nice four-game winning streak and another win would have tied with them with the Storm.
A'ja Wilson continues to be a force for the Aces as she heads into the break averaging 27.2 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. She has been on a tear for Las Vegas and will be key for the team's deeper run in the postseason.
#4 Seattle Storm | Overall record: 17-8 | Last 10 games: 8-2
The Seattle Storm are one of the teams that have made a case for themselves as legitimate playoff contenders. New additions Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith have proved to be the right moves and the team's stellar defensive rating of 93.9 — the third-best in the league has been a big reason behind their successful run.
What continues to be a cause for concern is the way they have fared against the top five teams this season.
#3 Minnesota Lynx | Overall record: 17-8 | Last 10 games: 5-5
The Minnesota Lynx are 3-2 in their last five games and ended their week with a win over the Washington Mystics. Their league-best defense has been their biggest strength.
The concerns come from Napheesa Collier's plantar fasciitis injury and their inconsistency on offense. Per CBS Sports, Minnesota is last in the WNBA in points in the paint per game (28.4) and 11th in free throw attempts (15.4). This could see them struggle in the playoffs.
#2 Connecticut Sun | Overall record: 18-6 | Last 10 games: 5-5
Like the Minnesota Lynx, the Connecticut Sun have been on the losing side in five of their last 10 games. In their recent game against the league-leading New York Liberty, they went down 82-74.
The Sun are also one of the teams that have been good defensively with the second-best defensive rating (93.4) this WNBA season. However, their three-point shooting has been subpar. They are 10th in the league in 3-point attempts per game (17.7) and 10th in the percentage of 3s made (31.4).
#1 New York Liberty | Overall record: 21-4 | Last 10 games: 8-2
The New York Liberty have been clinical so far this WNBA season. Their 21-4 record is the best record they have been off to in franchise history. Injuries to Breanna Stweart and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will be cause for concern but with the season hitting pause, the Liberty will hope to be back to full strength. Can they maintain their scintillating run when the season resumes?
