Caitlin Clark was instrumental in leading the Indiana Fever to their first playoff appearance since 2016, but the team could look very different next season under newly appointed head coach Stephanie White. With the WNBA free agency market set to open, several high-profile players could be on the move.
Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally are all unrestricted free agents, but according to a recent piece from ESPN, the Fever could be a match for one particular forward. Three-time All-Star Brionna Jones is coming off a solid season with the Connecticut Sun and there would be plenty of interest on the open market for a player of her caliber.
According to ESPN's Michael Voepel, Jones could be a great fit for Indiana considering she worked alongside coach Stephanie White in 2023 and 2024.
"Perhaps the 29-year-old could reunite with her coach with the Sun the past two years, Stephanie White, in Indiana," said Voepel in a recent piece for ESPN.
Brionna Jones was a vital member of White's Sun team last season. She featured in all 40 regular season games, averaging 13.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals.
Adding a dominant post player alongside Aliyah Boston would give the Fever a powerful one-two punch that few WNBA teams would be able to match.
There are plenty of incentives to play basketball in Indiana. The organization has a talented young core of players that includes Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Lexie Hull, NaLyssa Smith and Grace Berger.
The Fever had the highest attendance figures in the WNBA last year with an average of 17,036 fans per home game. That was over 4,000 fans more than the second-place New York Liberty. Viewership figures also skyrocketed when Indiana was playing. In 2024, 23 games recorded an average viewership of over one million and 20 of those games involved the Fever.
The opportunity to play alongside a generational talent like Caitlin Clark could be another draw for Brionna Jones. Clark was sensational during her rookie year, shattering the single-season assists record.
Indiana, however, is in a strong position entering the signing season considering Clark and Boston are both still on rookie deals. New head coach White will be looking to strengthen her roster in the coming weeks and Jones could be the perfect addition.
Fever All-Star Kelsey Mitchell speaks on upcoming free agency and potential reunion with Caitlin Clark
In October, All-Star shooting guard Kelsey Mitchell opened up about her looming free agency and the possibility of returning to Indiana for another season. Speaking with the Indiana Star's Chloe Peterson, the 29-year-old made the following comment.
"Obviously, I've always had a home in Indy, so it could potentially be a home for me again, but I think right now...I got to do what's best for me. That's no hanging my hat on one team or another, but I think it's specifically for me. I got to be selfish about that process," said Mitchell.
Feb. 1 is the date WNBA teams can officially sign free agents and the Fever still have to make a decision on Mitchell. The franchise could use its core designation to keep Mitchell for another year.
Last season, Mitchell averaged 19.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
The Fever's backcourt of Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell was one of the most dangerous in the league and helped guide the team to a 20-20 record. Fans in Indiana will be eager to have Mitchell back for another season, and hoping a deal can be worked out promptly.
