Cameron Brink's WNBA debut at the Los Angeles Sparks vs Atlanta Dream on May 15 was called out for bad lighting on social media. A video from the game made the rounds on Instagram and fans condemned the league in no uncertain terms.
One fan expressed his dissatisfaction by comparing the WNBA to the NBA, highlighting that such a thing would never have happened there.
"That would never happen in the NBA."
There was almost universal criticism of the lighting online:
"Do they got the crowd holding flashlights?" @blazelandusa said.
"This is real? I had better lighting in high school bro," @op_izzymars said.
The match was held at Cal State Long Beach and the old stadium was likely the cause of the poor lighting. Fans urged the Sparks to move their games to better arenas in Los Angeles to provide better amenities and lighting.
Cameron Brink delivered a solid debut performance despite losing to the Dream
Cameron Brink looked solid on her debut, to say the least. Despite suffering a loss in her very first professional game the former Stanford player held her own against WNBA veterans, registering 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists in the 92-81 loss.
Kia Nurse and Dearica Hamby led the charts for Sparks scoring 23 and 20 points respectively. The Dream were better on the night at asserting pressure, not allowing the Sparks too much space to work with. Rhyne Howard led the charts for Chicago, scoring 25 points.
Brink's debut may have been an eye-opener for her regarding the differences between collegiate basketball and professional basketball. That said, she displayed flashes of her potential from downtown and inside the paint, hyping up fans for what's to come in the future.
