Michaela Onyenwere and the Chicago Sky took a tough 86-70 loss against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday. The importance of the game at the business end of the WNBA regular season was not lost on anybody. The Sky’s social media team took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to acknowledge the tough loss despite battling hard.
The Dream’s social team, who must have been revelling after the win, reshared the Chicago post with a clip from the fourth quarter when the game was almost done and dusted with Atlanta leading 82-68 with 1:06 left on the clock. The video featured a dejected Michaela Onyenwere on the bench, clearly upset with the Sky’s performance.
The Chicago forward didn’t appreciate the trolling and wrote on X:
“Y’all so damn corny, I’m ngl.”
While the response seemed light-hearted, the loss will surely sting the Sky and will very likely impact their chances of progressing to the playoffs.
How did Chicago Sky's Michaela Onyenwere perform in loss to Atlanta Dream?
Michaela Onyenwere had eight points on 4-of-10 shooting in the loss to the Atlanta Dream. She went 0-for-4 from the 3-point line and was a -8 in plus/minus for the game. She just had one assist and a rebound and fouled out of the game after six calls.
While Onyenwere played to her usual standards, as she averages 6.7 points on the season, the Chicago Sky needed more from her in a game where Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso and Chennedy Carter didn’t play.
Before Tuesday’s games, the Sky, Dream and Washington Mystics were tied with a similar 13-25 record for the final playoff spot. After losses for Chicago and Washington, Atlanta now occupies the eighth spot with a 14-25 record.
While the Chicago Sky are not yet out, they need a lot to go their way. First, they need Atlanta and Washington to lose and then get a win themselves. This would eliminate the Mystics directly, while placing Chicago and Atlanta with similar 14-26 records.
Ties are normally sorted by head-to-head records. As the two teams tied their season series 2-2, whichever team has the better win percentage against teams with .500 or higher record will qualify.
If Chicago is to win against the Connecticut Sun in its final game, it would be the Sky’s fifth win over a team with .500 or better record. Atlanta has four such wins until now and a loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday will keep it at four wins.
