After calling for Dana Evans to be freed by the Chicago Sky, LA Sparks forward Azura Stevens has tried to find her way out of the ensuing backlash from Sky fans. On Sunday, Stevens took to X, formerly Twitter, to say that the fans had blown the thing out of proportion as she refused to engage with the enraged fans.
"i say one little thing and yall take it way too far 😂😂 leave me alone," Azura wrote.
"back to my burner i go lmao have a good night everyoneeeee," Azura wrote in a following post.
Earlier, Azura Stevens had posted about Chicago Sky's Dana Evans in response to her agent's post on X that highlighted Evans' reduced playtime, allegedly because she demanded to be traded from the team earlier this season.
"smh free dana," Stevens wrote.
Sky fans clapped back at Azura for her post and claimed that the Sparks star is often meddling with the Sky's business. Many also called out the Sparks' being last in the league and dealing with a losing streak to direct Azura into matters of her own team.
Dana Evans' agent fires shots at Chicago Sky for refusing to trade
Ahead of the WNBA trade deadline on Aug. 20, Dana Evans was expected to be traded given that the 5-foot-6 guard had demanded it earlier in the season. However, the Sky front office decided not to move Evans as revealed by her agent, Greg Jones, on X.
Following Evans' seven-minute playtime during the Sky's 77-75 loss against the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, Jones fired multiple shots at the franchise's decision to not move Evans during the trade window. To make his case, he highlighted Evans being dropped from the starting five earlier in the season despite her contributions to the team.
"I’ve never seen a player who was playing close to 30mins per game averaging 13ppg 5apg get blamed for slow starts moved to (the) bench and can’t get 10mins consistently," Jones tweeted. "Again a player who was at 13ppg 5apg as your point guard."
"Team didn’t want to move her when she requested a trade and didn’t want to move her at trade deadline. Yet (bring) in another point guard. Make it make sense," Jones said in a following tweet.
"So now it’s starting to look like and smell like she’s not getting mins because wanted out of Chicago," he wrote in another tweet. "Instead of professional basketball looking real amateur because folks feelings were hurt."
"Took her confidence to save face instead of dealing with the real issues on this team," Jones claimed in another tweet.
Dana Evans has no choice but to remain with the Chicago Sky for the remainder of the season. However, she may have an opportunity to take her talents elsewhere ahead of the next season, as she will be a restricted free agent after the 2024-25 WNBA season.
