The New York Liberty won their first WNBA title on Sunday after defeating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in OT in Game 5 of the finals. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith was among the many New Yorkers celebrating the win. However, fans were not amused by Smith’s tweet after the game.
Smith wrote on X, formerly Twitter:
“Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! New York Stand Up! New York Stand Up!! Go NY, Go NY….Go……..say Go NY, Go NY, GO!!!!!!”
Fans took this as an opportunity to troll the longtime New York Knicks fan.
“You ain’t even watch the game.”
Many fans said Stephen A. Smith joined the bandwagon after Liberty had already claimed the championship.
“Bro, just stop………. Stop claiming New York at all tbh,” a fan wrote.
“I thought Steelers were your team? This guy man,” another added.
“Cheer now but you have barely mentioned the Liberty all season on your super popular show you put the Aces and Fevers over more than the liberty,” a fan said.
Other fans took it as an opportunity to troll the Knicks for not winning an NBA title since 1973.
“This the only basketball championship that New York getting,” a fan wrote.
“There’s your 1 title for the next 20 years, make it count,” another fan said.
While there were obviously many detractors, it’s a well-documented fact that Stephen A. Smith is fiercely loyal to New York-based sports franchises. This is expected as he was born in The Bronx. His show “First Take” is based out of Manhattan as well.
Liberty won a nail-biter against Lynx to be crowned champions
The just-concluded 2024 WNBA finals had to be one of the best series in the history of basketball. After dropping Game 1, New York bounced back to finally take the series 3-2. The Minnesota Lynx showed great character as well to take the series to the final game.
Game 5 turned out to be a defensive masterclass as players from both teams struggled to make baskets. Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu shot 1 of 19 to finish the game with just five points. Breanna Stewart wasn’t great either as she went 4-of-15 shooting for 13 points.
For Minnesota, Napheesa Collier shot 11 of 23 for 22 points, while Courtney Williams had four points on 2-of-14 shooting.
The Lynx were up 60-58 with over a minute left in regular clock. Minnesota failed to score for the rest of regulation time as Stewart tied the game with two free throws with five seconds left on the clock.
The Liberty were able to pull away in overtime and were crowned champions in front of their home crowd. Jonquel Jones was named the finals MVP after averaging 17.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the series. She had 17 points on Sunday.
