The beef between Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes has taken center stage in the WNBA. Lieberman said on the “Stephen A. Smith Show” that Swoopes allegedly “got upset” after Lieberman told her to get her facts straight about Caitlin Clark.

After listening to Lieberman’s comments, Shannon Sharpe, on the “Nightcap” podcast, reacted (1:51:15 mark):

“I love Sheryl Swoopes. I met Sheryl Swoopes and had conversations with her a couple of times, always been grateful to me. I don’t think Nancy [Lieberman] said anything that’s wrong. Sheryl, your facts are off. … You upset because you said something that wasn’t factually correct and somebody corrects you?”

In January, Swoopes, a three-time WNBA MVP, appeared on “Gil’s Arena,” hosted by former NBA player Gilbert Arenas. She said Clark only broke Kelsey Plum’s NCAA women’s scoring record because she played five seasons and averaged 40 shots.

It's pertinent to note that Caitlin Clark eclipsed Plum’s scoring mark (3,527) in four years with the Hawkeyes by taking an average of 20.1 shots per game. The former Iowa star ended her career with 3,951 points, also zooming past the legendary Pete Maravich’s 3,667.

Swoopes pushed back against Lieberman and Stephen A. Smith:

“Now here you go! I get what you trying to do wit ya boy @stephenasmith but it ain't working. You know good and well what happened. And ditto...my life is good without you too(and him). You wanna go there?”

It remains to be seen if Swoopes will respond to Shannon Sharpe.

Shannon Sharpe claims Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes didn’t have a strong relationship

Chad Ochocinco Johnson, Shannon Sharpe’s co-host, said he couldn’t believe Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes cut off their friendship after that argument. In response, Sharpe said the friendship could never have been strong if a simple argument could have caused it to rupture.

“The least thing that can cause someone to distance themselves, the friendship was never legitimate or authentic, anyway," Sharpe added (1:42:15 mark). "The relationship wasn’t strong to begin with. … If somebody tries to correct me and I sever a relationship or I’m no longer on speaking terms, we never had a friendship to begin with.”

It will be interesting to see if the beef between Nancy Lieberman and Sheryl Swoopes continues over the remainder of the season. Caitlin Clark and Co. will face the Dallas Wings on Sept. 15.
