Nyara Sabally is a professional basketball player born on February 26, 2000, in Berlin, Germany. She is a forward for the New York Liberty in the WNBA as of 2024. Sabally’s transition to professional basketball was not easy as she had to deal with several ACL injuries that saw her sit out her first two seasons at the University of Oregon. However, she rose to the occasion and became one of the best players in the team and Pac-12 all-stars in 2021 and 2022.

Sabally was drafted fifth overall by the New York Liberty in the 2022 WNBA draft but she missed her rookie season due to another knee injury. She started her professional career in 2023 and averaged 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game, playing 33 games in the season. Apart from WNBA, Sabally has played for Germany’s national team in international tournaments such as the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship in 2018 where she emerged the winner and the 2024 Summer Olympics and was also named the tournament MVP due to her average of 17.3 points, 12.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

In her redshirt junior year (2021-2022), Sabally remained the team’s top scorer and rebounder, as she had been the previous year. She averaged 15.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game and was ranked sixth in scoring in the Pac-12 and third in rebounding. Sabally achieved eight double-doubles and scored in double figures in 19 of the 24 games she played. Some of her memorable performances include scoring 31 points in a single game against Belmont, an NCAA tournament record that was jointly held by Sabrina Ionescu. Sabally’s performance was impressive throughout the season, and she was awarded All-Pac-12 for two years in a row, which proved that she was an important asset to the Ducks team.
