Angel Reese had the Chicago Sky on the verge of playoff contention before a wrist injury ended her season. Given that many players will hit free agency after the 2025 season, Sun Times WNBA reporter Annie Costabile believes that the team should part ways with the No. 3 pick in this year's draft in order to bring another star to The Chi to play with Angel Reese.
Ahead of Saturday, when teams around the WNBA can start dishing out core player designations and making qualifying offers, Costabile made the case for the team to package the No. 3 pick in order to acquire either Satou Sabally or Jewell Loyd.
Sabally is fresh off a season where she missed 25 games due to a shoulder injury, however, she averaged a career-high 5.0 assists per game while showing marked improvement from downtown, going from a 36.1% 3-point shooter to a 45.2% 3-point shooter.
In the case of Jewell Loyd, the Seattle Storm standout has reportedly requested a trade after an investigation into the Storm's coaching staff turned up no violations. While it's unclear where Loyd will land, it seems to be more of a question of where she gets traded rather than a question of if she gets traded.
As Costabile wrote regarding the Sky's desire to pair Angel Reese with a star:
"Two players worth packaging the No. 3 pick for are Wings forward Satou Sabally and Storm guard Jewell Loyd."
Looking at the latest news surrounding Jewell Loyd and Satou Sabally as the Chicago Sky look to acquire another star to pair with Angel Reese
After the 2024 WNBA season, Jewell Loyd filed a complaint with the Seattle storm, alleging harassment and bullying by the team's coaching staff. In response, the franchise hired an outside investigator to look into the allegations.
When the results were announced in early December, indicating that the investigation turned up no wrongdoing on the part of the Storm's coaches, Loyd responded by requesting a trade.
Since then, there has been little news of where the six-time All-Star may land. As Annie Costabile wrote for the Sun Times, with the Sky set to open their new training facility leading up to the 2026 season, a trade for Loyd, who is from Illinois, could make sense to pair her with Angel Reese.
In the case of Satou Sabally, it's unclear where the Wings standout will look to go this offseason. However, given that many players are preparing to sign one-year deals in order to hit free agency next year, it seems like wherever she goes will wind up being a temporary stop unless the team is able to extend her next year.
