Opals legend Sandy Brondello currently serves as the head coach of the New York Liberty in the WNBA. Brondello’s basketball life began in her homeland Australia, where she played in the Women's National Basketball League. In 1992, she was celebrated as the Australian Basketball Player of the Year because of her performance in WNBL. Over her time with the Brisbane Blazers in the WNBL, Brondello reached the playoffs three times and was awarded the Most Valuable Player in 1995. In 1998, Brondello was drafted by the Detroit Shock in the WNBA. As a player in Opals Jersey, she became a four-time Olympian and got three medals, two silver and one bronze.

Brondello’s coaching journey started as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Silver Stars, followed by similar roles with other teams. In 2013 She signed with the Phoenix Mercury and led this team to a WNBA championship and was named WNBA Coach of the Year that same season. In 2022, she became the head coach of the New York Liberty. More recently, Brondello guided the New York Liberty to victory in the 2023 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup. In the 2024 season, her team Liberty took the top seed in the WNBA table.

Olaf Lange has been the husband of Sandy Brondello since 2005. Currently, Lange is assisting his wife as an assistant coach in the New York Liberty team. Lange was born on 30th March 1972 in Berlin, Germany. He did his schooling and graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin. He also started his coaching career in Germany itself. In 2005 he got the opportunity to coach a college team in the USA named The Liberty Lady Flames basketball team. From there Lange got into WNBA teams and started a coaching legacy in the USA.

Olaf’s achievements as an assistant coach include the 2021 WNBA Championship when he worked for the Chicago Sky.
