Shakira Austin is a professional basketball player from Fredericksburg, Virginia, in the United States. Born on July 25, 2000, she plays as a center for the Washington Mystics. Austin was the third overall pick by the Mystics in the 2022 WNBA Draft. She attended the University of Maryland (2018-2020) and the University of Mississippi (2020-2022), playing for the Maryland Terrapins Women’s Basketball team and the Ole Miss Rebels Women’s Basketball team, respectively. During her collegiate career, she was named to the First-team All-SEC in 2021 and 2022, the Second-team All-Big Ten in 2020, the Big Ten All-Defensive Team in 2019, and the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2019.
She graduated from Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and was selected as a McDonald's All-American in 2018. She also received the Gillom Trophy in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, she was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2022. Internationally, she played for the USA Women’s Basketball team in the 2022 FIBA World Cup in Australia and won the gold medal. She qualified for the 2024 USA Women's National Team April training camp roster in Cleveland and also participated in the 2018 USA Under-18 National Team trials.
