Sug Sutton College

Alecia Kaorie Sutton, known as Sug Sutton, is an American combo guard playing for the Washington Mystics as of September 2024. Born on December 17, 1998, in Saint Louis, Missouri, Sutton attended Parkway North High School and emerged as a standout two-way guard. She later played college basketball at the University of Texas from 2016 to 2020. Sutton was selected 36th pick in the third round of the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics.

Sutton faced rookie adjustments initially, but once she overcame it, she showcased her skills as a crafty combo guard. Sutton handles the ball well, sets up plays like a true point guard, and at the same time, she is a high-percentage shooter. She shot a commendable 33.3% from three-point distance in the 2023 WNBA season. In 2023, while playing for the Phoenix Mercury, Sutton made history by recording the first triple-double in the franchise’s history, with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in a game against the Las Vegas Aces. Sutton continues to be an impactful player in the WNBA.

Sug Sutton had an outstanding college career at the University of Texas from 2016 to 2020. Over her four years, Sutton earned several accolades, including First-Team All-Big 12 in 2019 and Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2020. She was also named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team in 2019. Additionally, Sutton received the Judy Dunn Award in 2019.

In her freshman and sophomore years, Sutton showcased her potential and growth, but she wasn’t a starter for the team. However, as a junior, Sutton was a First-Team All-Big 12 selection and was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. Sutton also recorded her first two career double-doubles and was the Most Valuable Player of the Gulf Coast Showcase. As a senior, Sug Sutton led the Longhorns with an average of 4.3 assists per game, ranking fourth in the Big 12. She also led the team in steals per game, averaging 1.8. By the end of her college career, Sutton had played 131 games with 65 starts, ranked 39th in career points at Texas with 1,091 points, and tied for ninth in career assists with 419. Besides being a brilliant basketball player for the University of Texas, Sug Sutton’s academic achievements were also noteworthy. Sutton earned Academic All-Big 12 honors and made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll multiple times.

Sug Sutton High School

Sug Sutton attended Parkway North High School and played for their basketball team. Sutton was ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the nation by espnW Hoop Gurlz and the No. 2 point guard in the Class of 2016. During her junior year at Parkway North, Sutton averaged 16.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, leading her team to a 25-6 record and a third-place finish in the state tournament. She also earned MVP at the Super 64 Tournament in Texas and the Adidas Nationals in Georgia while playing for Missouri Phenom, and led them to championships in both events.

In her senior year, Sutton was named a Naismith Second-Team All-American, but her season was cut short after she tore her ACL in December 2015. Before her injury, she was averaging 14.3 points per game. Despite this setback, Sutton remained one of the most promising players in the country and eventually joined the University of Texas.
