Caitlin Clark has emerged as one of the WNBA's most admired and popular figures in her rookie year but not everyone is a fan. Former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes has been critical of the Iowa native for months and her latest conduct may have led to her being dropped from Sunday's broadcast between the Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings.
WNBA fans were quick to notice that Swoopes wasn't announcing the game in Dallas. Many took to social media to react to the news, mostly in a negative way.
"They need to fire her," said a fan.
"She’s basically arguing with a wall while CC quietly dominates," commented one fan.
"Next step is stop sponsoring her podcast. No place for hate in the W," said another fan.
"Sheryl Swoopes is a media disaster," said a fan.
"Sue is seen in the crowd at most of the games anyway, might as well give her a mic," one fan wrote.
Well-known sports personality Stephen A. Smith was also vocal about Swoopes' behavior. Smith called her "insane" for refusing to mention Caitlin Clark when speaking about the rise of the Fever on his podcast.
"Sheryl Swoopes really sunk so low that people have to agree with Steven A. Smith now," wrote another fan.
While commentating on the Las Vegas Aces and Dallas Wings game, Swoopes chose to remain quiet for nearly a minute while her colleague was announcing Clark being named WNBA Player of the Week, leading to an awkward silence in the broadcast.
Caitlin Clark was on the receiving end of two flagrant fouls during her team's victory over the Chicago Sky on Friday. Swoopes actually came out and defended the Sky's Diamond DeShields with a bizarre message after what appeared to be a clear flagrant. On her X account after the game, Swoopes wrote:
"Head up kid! Hate will not win!! You are covered and ain't nothing these evil people can do about that. All love for you!"
One of the jobs of a sports broadcaster is to provide objective and unbiased analysis and many fans believe that Sheryl Swoopes has failed to deliver on that front.
Caitlin Clark leads Indiana Fever to their best regular season record since 2019
Indiana Fever's 100-93 win over the Dallas Wings adds to the team's four-game winning streak. Fever has won eight of their last 10 games and has jumped up to sixth in the WNBA standings. They are only a few wins away from securing a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2016.
Led by strong performances from Caitlin Clark and her teammates, the Fever has been outstanding. Sunday's win over the Wings also means this is the first time since 2019 that Indiana has gone over .500 in the regular season.
Clark is averaging 18.7 points, 8.4 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals this season.
