Throughout her career, Charles has received numerous accolades, including WNBA MVP in 2012, WNBA Scoring Champion in 2016 and 2021, among others. She has also played overseas for various teams, earning additional honors and championships.

Charles graduated from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut, and played for the UConn Huskies women's basketball team from 2006 to 2010. She was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2006 and was named National Player of the Year by the WBCA, USA Today, and McDonald's All-American. During her collegiate career, she recorded double-digit points 120 times in her 152 games.
