Gabby Williams is getting looks from several WNBA teams after a heroic Olympic performance. Reports indicate that the former 2018 No. 4 pick could sign with one of three teams as she eyes a potential return to the WNBA.
In six games in Paris, Williams averaged 15.5 points, 4.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 48 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point terrirtory. She also displayed her defensive versatility, notching 2.8 steals per game.
Against Team USA, Gabby Williams continued her strong play on the biggest stage, posting 19 points, three assists, seven rebounds and three steals, nearly pushing France to the gold medal. France lost a heartbreaker, 67-66, but Williams made her mark at the Olympics.
She's also considering remaining in France, setting her up for unrestricted free agency following the conclusion of the WNBA season. Williams is fielding many offers to return to the WNBA, but only one team can land her.
Top three Gabby Williams landing spots
#1 Seattle Storm
One of three listed destinations Gabby Williams reportedly prefers, the Seattle Storm could be a possible landing spot for the French star.
Williams played her last two WNBA seasons in Seattle, averaging 7.7 points, 3.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 42 percent from the field.
She could bring a strong defensive presence and solid scoring to Seattle's second unit. The Storm could use Williams' versatility to bolster their bench. She could join a backcourt populated by the talented duo of Jewell Loyd and Skylar Diggins-Smith and help the Strom as they gear up for a playoff run.
The team entered the All-Star break with a 17-8 record and the fourth seed in the WNBA.
#2 New York Liberty
Another preferred destination of Williams, the New York Liberty give her arguably the best chance at winning, with a league-best 21-4 record.
The Liberty lack bench depth at guard, making Williams an enticing prospect as she eyes a WNBA return. Outside of Sabrina Ionescu and Courtney Vandersloot, the Liberty are thin at guard. The next guard on the roster, Ivana Dojkic, is averaging 3.7 points per game while shooting just 32 percent from the field.
Adding Williams could help put the Liberty over the top as WNBA champions as they continue regular season play looking to defend their top seed.
#3 Phoenix Mercury
Last on Gabby Williams' list is the Phoenix Mercury, who have the worst record of her three preferred destinations, resuming play with a 13-12 record and the sixth seed in the WNBA.
While Phoenix is somewhat crowded at the guard positions, Williams' defensive prowess and consistent shooting numbers could help her carve out a significant role for the Mercury.
Williams could help lift a Mercury squad looking to battle for a higher seed in the playoff hunt, giving its bench a sparkplug, thanks to her strong defensive upside.
