The WNBA is having an amazing season, and record-breaking rookies like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese are two of the main reasons why. However, the league is set to take a short break on Sept. 2, when there are no games scheduled to be played.

According to the WNBA's schedule, zero games will be played on Labor Day, which is a federal holiday in the United States. It's unclear if Labor Day is the reason why there are no games on Sept. 2, but the league took a break on the same holiday in the past two years.

The league held games on Labor Day in 2020 and 2021 but it could be due to the compressed schedule as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that there were no games on Labor Day from 2015 to 2019.

According to Basketball Reference, the only years outside the pandemic where there were games on Labor Day were 2013, 2014, 2008, 2007 and 2003. While it's safe to assume that the league is using the holiday to give players a rest, the seasons from 1997 and 2002 didn't even reach Labor Day.

Another potential reason for the WNBA not scheduling any games on Sept. 2 is to prevent player fatigue. There have been a bunch of back-to-back games ever since the second half of the season started.

With the playoffs less than three weeks away, the league will likely want their best players fresh and ready for battle. Sports fans can still enjoy Labor Day by watching the MLB, tuning in on Florida State vs. Boston College in the CFB, or soaking in the action on WWE RAW on the USA Network.

The Las Vegas Aces entered the season as the favorites to win the 2024 WNBA championship and claim the second three-peat in league history.

However, the Aces have struggled this season despite the brilliance of MVP favorite A'ja Wilson. They sit fourth in the standings and are barely ahead of the Seattle Storm.

Based on the latest betting odds, the New York Liberty are the favorites to win it all this year. The Liberty own the best record in the league at 27-6, but a couple of slips could give the Connecticut Sun a chance at stealing the top spot ahead of the playoffs.

The Aces have the second-best odds followed by the Minnesota Lynx, the Sun, Storm and the upstart Indiana Fever. It will be interesting to see if the Fever can use their momentum for a historic and improbable run in the playoffs.
