The Chicago Sk are looking to change things up after finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference last season. Since the team parted ways with Chennedy Carter, who started at point guard in 20 out of their 40 games, the Sky need to find another dynamic floor general to beef up their backcourt.
Jewell Loyd, who requested a trade from the Seattle Storm after filing a bullying complaint against the team's coaching staff, appeared to be an interesting choice as she hails from Illinois. However, WNBA insider Annie Costabile reported on Thursday that talks between the Storm and the Sky "have cooled substantially."
In the same Chicago Sun-Times report, Costabile identified other options that the Sky could pursue.
Here are five point guards that Sky General Manager Jeff Pagliocca is said to be considering.
5 PGs Chicago Sky could pursue after talks with Jewell Loyd cooled down
#1. Courtney Vandersloot
It's no surprise that Courtney Vandersloot is reportedly the "top target" of Pagliocca. "The General" has won two WNBA titles in her career, most recently with the New York Liberty last season.
Vandersloot's first ring, of course, came in 2021, during her 12th season with the Chicago Sky. A Chi-town homecoming for Vandersloot makes sense as a key priority of the Sky front office.
#2. Allisha Gray
If Vandersloot is a grizzled vet at the tail end of her career, Allisha Gray is a stud who's entering her prime years. Gray, was named 2017 WNBA Rookie of the Year and made the All-Star team in 2023 and 2024. Averaging 15.6 points per game last season, Gray can help fill the scoring void left by Chennedy Carter.
#3. Ariel Atkins
Ariel Atkins is another interesting prospect as she has proven to be reliable on both ends of the floor. Atkins has been named to the All-Defensive Team five times in her career, and over the past few seasons, the two-time All-Star has complemented her defensive chops with steady scoring production.
#4. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton
Like Vandersloot, Laney-Hamilton began her WNBA career in Chicago and won a title with the New York Liberty this past season. However, she has an edge in size as she stands four inches taller than the 5-foot-8 Vandersloot. Aside from her scoring and playmaking, "Queen B" — a two-time All-Defensive Team section — can be called upon to defend both guard positions.
#5. Rae Burrell
According to Costabile, Sky GM Pagliocca could "end up asking" for Burrell, presumably because of her age and size. The 6-foot-2 guard/forward has played just three seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, and her potential is sky-high. Growing alongside Angel Reese in Chicago could be an interesting scenario for Burrell.
