The Chicago Sky are looking to build a new culture under head coach Tyler Marsh with plenty of young talent on their roster. The Sky are coming off their worst season since 2020, losing a five-year playoff streak dating back to 2019.
Chicago elected to move on from first-year head coach, Theresa Weatherspoon, who built a strong rapport with her players in her lone season as the Sky's head coach. As presently constructed, the Sky's roster isn't built to compete for a championship in 2025, but a splash this offseason could significantly bolster their title odds entering the new season.
On Wednesday afternoon, chatter of a potential deal with the Connecticut Sun emerged in Chicago.
"(Chicago) also met with Sun guard, DiJonai Carrington, who is a restricted free agent," Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Entering the offseason, the Sky likely will not be able to sign DiJonai Carrington, given she is a restricted free agent, but could strike a sign-and-trade deal with the Sun to land the 2024 Most Improved Player. Carrington fits Tyler Marsh's defensive-minded coaching philosophy and could find some development in her 3-point shot with Marsh at the helm.
Carrington is coming off her best WNBA season to date, averaging 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. The Sky also appear to be targeting a familiar face this offseason.
Chicago Sky eyeing Courtney Vandersloot in free agency
The Chicago Sky have also reportedly met with five-time WNBA All-Star and the franchise's all-time leader in assists, Courtney Vandersloot. Chicago is looking to land the reigning WNBA champ in free agency, though her price tag could be immense.
The 35-year-old guard is coming off one of the most inefficient seasons of her career in a significantly reduced role in New York. Though she started in each of the 31 games she appeared in, she logged a career-low 22.3 minutes per game.
"I want to have the ball in my hands and create the way I think that I can," Vandersloot told reporters, speaking on her desires for a new team.
Vandersloot would be an enticing pick-and-roll partner for Chicago's post duo of Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, who the Sky are looking to build around going forward. Though she could present somewhat of a sacrifice on the defensive end entering her 15th NBA season, Courtney Vandersloot could be a very complimentary signing for the Chicago Sky's young pairing.
