The WNBA MVP ladder continues to heat up after a month into the season, with A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces remaining as the betting favorite. Alyssa Thomas closes the gap as the Connecticut Sun own the best record in the league at the end of Week 4.
Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Timberwolves still shines as the team's lone superstar, while Breanna Stewart has the New York Liberty rolling in the 2024 WNBA Commissioner's Cup. Stewart and the Liberty are currently on a roll and will try to win back-to-back WNBA Cup Finals.
However, the talk of the town is the 12-woman roster for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Some might consider Arike Ogunbowale and Caitlin Clark as snubbed, with fans calling out Team USA's selection committee for failing to market the WNBA with the Indiana Fever star.
WNBA 2024 Most Valuable Player Ladder - Week 4
#5 - Kahleah Copper | Guard | Phoenix Mercury
- Last Week's Ranking: NR
- Games Played (Week 4) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 4) - 27.3 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.3 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.7 BPG
- Average (Season) - 24.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.0 SPG, 0.3 BPG
Kahleah Copper has pushed Arike Ogunbowale on both Team USA and this week's WNBA MVP rankings. Copper has been on fire for the Phoenix Mercury all season just like with Ogunbowale with the Dallas Wings.
However, Copper has led the Mercury to a 2-1 record after Week 4 while the Wings are on a five-game losing streak. She also averaged 27.3 points in three games last week.
#4 - Breanna Stewart | Forward | New York Liberty
- Last Week's Ranking: #4
- Games Played (Week 4) - 4 GP (4 W, 0 L)
- Average (Week 4) - 21.3 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.8 BPG
- Average (Season) - 18.9 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.9 SPG, 1.0 BPG
Breanna Stewart was back to her MVP form in the New York Liberty's first two games of Week 4. However, Stewart struggled again in her team's final two contests of the week.
The good news for the reigning WNBA MVP is that the Liberty are clicking on all cylinders. They are on a seven-game winning streak and will likely represent the Eastern Conference in the 2024 Commissioner's Cup Final.
#3 - Napheesa Collier | Forward | Minnesota Lynx
- Last Week's Ranking: #3
- Games Played (Week 4) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 4) - 21.3 PPG, 11.7 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.3 SPG, 0.7 BPG
- Average (Season) - 21.4 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, 1.5 BPG
Napheesa Collier remains a strong candidate for this year's NBA MVP award due to her consistency. The Minnesota Lynx went 2-1 last week and Collier was the main reason why they snapped the Seattle Storm's winning streak and defeated the LA Sparks with ease.
Collier was a double-double machine for Minnesota and could continue to climb the MVP ladder if she continues to perform like a superstar.
#2 - Alyssa Thomas | Forward | Connecticut Sun
- Last Week's Ranking: #1
- Games Played (Week 4) - 3 GP (2 W, 1 L)
- Average (Week 4) - 8.0 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 7.0 APG, 1.0 SPG 0.0 BPG
- Average (Season) - 12.2 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 8.5 APG, 1.4 SPG 0.5 BPG
Alyssa Thomas dropped to the second spot despite having a better record than A'ja Wilson in Week 4. It's hard to not put Thomas as No. 1, but she had a triple-single performance last week.
The Connecticut Sun lost their first game of the season as well, with Thomas helping the team bounce back. She will need to be more aggressive and impactful to dethrone Wilson atop the WNBA MVP ladder rankings.
#1 - A'ja Wilson | Forward | Las Vegas Aces
- Last Week's Ranking: #2
- Games Played (Week 4) - 3 GP (1 W, 2 L)
- Average (Week 4) - 32.0 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 2.3 APG, 3.0 SPG, 3.3 BPG
- Average (Season) - 28.3 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, 1.9 SPG, 3.0 BPG
The Las Vegas Aces might not be performing like the defending back-to-back champions, but A'ja Wilson is playing like an MVP. The Aces had a total of six losses last season, but already have four in the first nine games of the season.
One of the several positives for the Aces is Wilson, who is currently leading the league in scoring. She's been an unstoppable force on both sides of the floor and could also realistically win her third straight Defensive Player of the Year award.
