The Las Vegas Aces have looked like the Aces of old with comprehensive wins over the Atlanta Dream and Phoenix Mercury. More so than the wins themselves, it was how the two-time defending champions went about their business.
Their offense was in full flow, and their defense finally showed up on more than just one occasion. This puts them in the spotlight in our weekly power rankings as the 2024 WNBA season ends Week 13.
Before hitting the top five, it's worth mentioning that the Indiana Fever deserves just as much credit as any of the top five teams. The Caitlin Clark-led team has been phenomenal and has held a winning percentage. The wins also see them inch closer to booking a sixth-seed playoff slot.
WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. Las Vegas Aces (Week 13)
#5. Seattle Storm
The Seattle Storm have slipped a rung and are on a two-game losing skid. They went down to the New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun, and are now 3-8 overall against the top four teams in the league. While their defense remains watertight, the Storm have not had their offense going off any of the top-tier teams, and that comes as a concern.
#4. Las Vegas Aces
The Aces largely owe their wins to A'ja Wilson, whose MVP-level run has been hard to ignore after her recent exploits. The forward had two 40-point games earlier and the rest of the team have finally found the formula to play winning basketball. The question for the Aces: Can they keep up their consistency?
#3. Minnesota Lynx
The Wings snapped the Minnesota Lynx's seven-game winning streak, but they showed it was just an aberration with a solid win over the Chicago Sky. The Lynx have been stellar on the defensive end and their offense complements the play the other end of the floor well. They continue to be one of the teams mentioned as potential title candidates along with the Las Vegas Aces.
#2. Connecticut Sun
The Connecticut Sun has been a team to beat this season. While they may have lost to the Indiana Fever, they were back in the winning column with a timely win against the Washington Mystics and the Storm. Dijonai Carrington continues to be a force for the Sun with her impact play on both ends of the floor.
#1. New York Liberty
The New York Liberty have been firm in their standings, and despite a loss to the Sparks, they have been in good form with Breanna Stewart hitting the three-ball well, NY looks in even better shape. They have been cool and clinical this season, and only time will tell if they can keep up the impressive run in the playoffs.
