WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. Las Vegas Aces (Week 8)

Indiana Fever v Las Vegas Aces
WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. Las Vegas Aces (Week 8)

The Las Vegas Aces are on the rise. The defending champions headline Week 8 of our WNBA power rankings after a solid run in their last few games. The Aces boasted an impressive record before losing to the LA Sparks last week, ending their six-game winning streak. Despite the loss, they managed to bounce back against the Dallas Wings and make a quick course correction as the 2024 WNBA season hits the midway mark.

The New York Liberty continue to dominate and take the top spot, while the Connecticut Sun's three out of three wins see them take second place. The Aces are a close third, while the Minnesota Lynx and the Seattle Storm take fourth and fifth place respectively.

WNBA Power Rankings: Top five teams ft. Las Vegas Aces (Week 8)

#5 Seattle Storm | Overall record: 14-7 | Last 10 games: 7-3

Ezi Magbegor - Seattle Storm
Ezi Magbegor - Seattle Storm

This Seattle Storm are the real deal. Twenty-one games into their 2024 WNBA season, they have shown that their defense is capable of stifling even the best of the offensive units in the league. They won two of their three games last week, taking their win record to 7-3 in their last 10 matchups.

The Storm boast a 94.3 defensive rating — the third-best in the league, and just a rung below with a 102.0 offensive rating. Jewell Lloyd continues to have a solid season, while Ezi Magbegor has been their force on both ends of the floor.

#4 Minnesota Lynx | Overall record: 15-6 | Last 10: 7-3

Courtney Williams - Minnesota Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx are weathering some rough weather. They dropped consecutive games, and to exacerbate matters, lost MVP candidate Napheesa Collier to a foot injury. An aggravated plantar fasciitis in her left foot sees her out indefinitely, and help isn't coming over the nearest hill.

However, they have the size and firepower to keep themselves in the win column, with Courtney Williams and Kayla McBride. The Lynx are still the No.1 defensive side in the league this WNBA edition with a 92.1 rating.

#3 Las Vegas Aces | Overall record: 14-7 | Last 10: 8-2

A'ja Wilson - Las Vegas Aces
A'ja Wilson - Las Vegas Aces

The Las Vegas Aces have players coming into form at the right time. If it was Chelsea Gray who made her way back to quarterback the Aces to a series of wins, Kelsey Plum took over with consistent outings for LV in their last few games. The guard has blown hot and cold this season but appears to have rediscovered her shooting touch.

The Aces are still one of the more lethal offensive sides in the WNBA, like last season and the year before. Their fourth place in the overall standings doesn't tell the complete picture, but their 102.8 offensive rating that's first in the WNBA this season speaks of the firepower at their disposal.

A'ja Wilson continues to be the frontrunner for MVP with her consistent performances. Quite simply, the Aces are now bonafide title defenders.

#2 Connecticut Sun | Overall record: 17- 4 | Last 10 games: 7-3

DeWanna Bonner - Connecticut Sun
DeWanna Bonner - Connecticut Sun

After a topsy-turvy Week, the Connecticut Sun got back to winning ways with three wins on the bounce to move back into tying with the Liberty for first place.

Both teams are at 17 wins and four losses apiece. DeWanna Bonner has been their key weapon, and now they face a stern test when they play New York twice in the next three games.

Connecticut has been one of the more balanced teams this season with an offensive rating of 102.6, and a defensive rating of 93.6. They are still a team leaning towards defense as their key identity. Only time will tell if they can lock down the Liberty this week.

#1 New York Liberty | Overall record: 17-4 | Last 10: 8-2

Jonquel Jones - New York Liberty
Jonquel Jones - New York Liberty

The New York Liberty are tied with the Las Vegas Aces for the most wins in their last 10 contests.

Despite their shock loss to Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, their style of ball has been near-clinical. NY's Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones have been propping up the numbers, resulting in a 1-1 run last week.

If the WNBA Finals were today, the Liberty would be the easy favorites to win, given their run of form. Their offense continues to be a threat with a 107.7 rating — a number only bettered by the Aces.
