WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. New York Liberty (Week 9)

The 2024 WNBA season takes a break after Week 9 and the New York Liberty have been the team to beat this edition. The Eastern Conference powerhouse is on a three-game winning streak, the second-best after the Las Vegas Aces (four) as they continue to dominate the overall standings in first place. Liberty headlines the Week 9 power rankings as the teams gear up for a solid push before the All-Star break.

Also making the headlines are Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, who have now climbed to seventh place in the standings with an 11-14 record and a two-game winning streak. They are just one win behind the sixth-placed Phoenix Mercury (12-12) and three games away from hitting the .500 mark as they look to be dark horses to stake a playoff berth.

Here's a closer look at the New York Liberty-led top five teams for the weekly power rankings.

WNBA Power Rankings: Top 5 teams ft. New York Liberty (Week 9)

#5. Seattle Storm | Overall record: 16-8 | Last 10 games: 7-3

The Seattle Storm continues to find a place in the top five. They ended their nine-game homestand with a convincing win over the Atlanta Dream and won seven of their contests. While homecourt advantage is a massive boost, the simple fact is that they have been a good team so far this season.

Despite the loss to the Aces earlier, they bounced back with handsome wins over the Minnesota Lynx and the Dream. Seattle is the third-best defensive team in the league and leads the pack in steals and blocks. Expect them to lean more towards that aspect of the game for the rest of their campaign.

#4. Connecticut Sun | Overall record: 18-5 | Last 10 games: 6-4

It was a week of contrasting performances for the Connecticut Sun. Their defense rose to the forefront with a win over the Phoenix Mercury, but they were torched by the New York Liberty. Their offense has been questionable against big sides and their 2-4 record against the top five units shows their weakness against teams with better offensive ratings.

Rachel Banham injected that spark on offense when she nailed eight 3-pointers against the Mercury, but the rest of the team has sputtered on that front. With their campaign ending this Tuesday, as they clash with New York Liberty again, they will hope their offense bucks up.

#3. Minnesota Lynx | Overall record: 16-8 | Last 10 games: 5-5

The Minnesota Lynx has looked like a more well-pieced unit since the start of the 2024 WNBA season. Their offense isn't as flamboyant as NY's or as explosive as the Aces' but it does get the job done with Kayla McBuckets and Napheesa Collier dishing out key performances.

They will hope to notch up a win against the Dream as Collier continues to rehab from her Plantar Fasciitis. With their two-way talent expected to be back to full flow after the Olympics break, the Lynx will feel they are better placed to finish as one of the top three seeds.

#2. Las Vegas Aces | Overall record: 16-7 | Last 10 games: 9-1

The Aces blew a six-game winning streak earlier, but are on the verge of getting that mark again with four straight wins. They are the hottest team in the league right now with nine wins in their last 10 games and rocketing to second place overall in the standings.

A'ja Wilson's recent three-game blitz shows why she is the leading candidate to win MVP. Her averages are impressive with 28.3 points on 53.3/42.9/100 shooting splits, 18.3 rebounds, two steals and 3.7 blocks so far this season. It won't be surprising if the WNBA Finals comes down to Aces versus New York Liberty again.

#1. New York Liberty | Overall record: 20-4 | Last 10 games: 8-2

The New York Liberty have the least losses for any team this season. They are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Their 11-1 record at home shows their dominance defending their house. They are first in the league with a 107.0 offensive rating. Their 95.8 defensive rating is the fourth-best overall. They notched up three consecutive wins to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

Sabrina Ionescu hit a purple patch last week, averaging 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and five blocks, including a game-saving swatter against the Sun. On paper, they are one of the best sides this season with the numbers to prove it.
